Elizabeth Austin, 94

July 28, 2017


WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Elizabeth (Russell) Austin, 94, of Williamstown died on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Williamstown Commons.



She was born in Bennington, Vt., on January 11, 1923, a daughter of Fred & Anna (Hildebrand) Russell. She attended schools in North Bennington



She and her husband moved to South Williamstown in the early 1940s. Elizabeth worked for many prominent families in South Williamstown and worked primarily as a bookkeeper for the Phelps Farm in South Williamstown, Mass. She was well known for her family's chicken and egg business and their vegetable & fruit stand on Hancock Road.



She and her husband spent many winters in Anna Maria Island, Fla., after his retirement from the town of Williamstown. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, gardening, traveling and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown.



She married Charles Edward Austin on March 25, 1941; he died November 7, 2009, after 68 years of marriage.  



She leaves two daughters, Barbara Austin of North Adams and Sandra Cunningham and her husband Stephen of  Williamstown; one son, Dennis J.Austin of Palm Coast, Fla., and his wife Laurie; seven grandchildren, Wayne and Fritz Austin, Travis, Brody, Avery, Meghan Miner Cunningham and Amber DeMarsico Birkland; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Ann Austin of Brunswick, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.



Funeral notice: A memorial service to celebrate the life of Elizabeth Austin will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at  11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown. A private burial will take place in Southlawn Cemetery.



There are no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for the Second Congregational Church through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA.
