Dorothy Bliss, 101

August 19, 2017


WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Dot Bliss passed away on August 19, 2017, in Williamstown Commons Nursing Home. She was 101 years old. 



Born Dorothy May Davison on May 2, 1916, she was the youngest but two of the eleven children of Alfred and Ann Elizabeth Davison of Beaver Street, North Adams. Originally from Yorkshire, England, Alfred and Ann immigrated to the U.S. in 1909, bringing with them five children: Norman, Emily, Robert, Alfred Jr. and Ivy. Their family then grew by a further six children born in North Adams: Gladys, twins William and Lillian, Dorothy, George and Laura.  



Dot was predeceased by her siblings and husband, Clarence Bliss of Stamford, Vt. They were married in 1939 and  both worked at Sprague Electric until their retirement. 



From a young age Dot maintained an active interest in sports. In high school, she was the captain of the girls basketball team and an enthusiastic supporter of the Red Sox throughout her life. With her husband Clarence she enjoyed swimming, as well as winter activities such as cross country skiing and snowshoeing on their farm in Vermont. Dot was a keen golfer, playing well into her 80's at her local golf club, Stamford Valley Golf Club, where she played in the ladies league. 



She was a member of St John's Episcopal Church of North Adams. Also actively involved in community life, Dot helped prepare the Christmas lunches for Senior Citizens for 25 years. Her handicraft skills included knitting, crocheting and dress making, often making her own clothes. 



She leaves an extended family, including the following nieces and nephews: Susan O'Brien & family of New Hampshire, Robert West & Kathy & families of Massachusetts, Gail Miller & family of the UK, ShirleyAnn Davison & family of Maine, Russell & Mark Liddle & families of New York, Mary Beth Polchanimoff & family of Connecticut, Ann Longley & family of Massachusetts, Linda Tomasello & family of Florida, and Lance Liddle of North Adams.  



She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed.



Funeral notice: A private service for Dot Bliss will be held at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, Mass. Burial will be in Millard Cemetery in Stamford, Vt.



There are no calling hours.  Memorial donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church in care of the funeral home.
