WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A retired epidemiologist Tuesday night challenged the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee to take the lead on addressing "an epidemic in slow motion" by suspending the district's high school football program.

Dr. Nicholas Wright gave a presentation to the committee outlining some of the evidence that full contact football presents a severe concussion risk to its participants — so severe that the extracurricular activity is incompatible with the school's mission.

Wright went further, suggesting that the school district challenge the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to take the same step and replace its current

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- UNICO will induct five athletes in its Baseball/Softball Hall of Fame on Friday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m.   The 21st induction dinner and ceremony will be held at Berkshire Hills Country Club. Past recipients are encouraged to attend. It is championship time for college athletes in fall sports, and Berkshire County products are contributing for their teams throughout New England and beyond.

 

On Saturday, the Wentworth College women’s soccer team won the Commonwealth Coast Conference title with a 4-0 win over Gordon, and sophomore Taylor Patti again helped contribute to the shutout in the back.

 

Patti has appeared in 14 games this fall for the Leopards (15-3-3). The team has allowed just 13 goals for a .60 goals against average.   Sophomore (Pittsfield) assisted on the goal in Springfield College’s regular season finale, a 1-0 win over Wellesley, and she appeared in both the

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The annual Up Front  for DeMar 5K race and 1 mile walk and pasta dinner will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13.   These annual events raise money for the SPC Michael R DeMarsico II scholarship fund and to honor DeMarsico and all who serve and have served.   SPC DeMarsico was killed in action on Aug. 16, 2012, while serving in Afghanistan. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Under cloudy skies and cool fall temperatures, Kevin Quinto of Pittsfield High School Saturday won the American Junior Golf Association qualifier at Waubeeka Golf Links.   Quinto carded an even par 71 with three birdies and three bogeys.   South Windsor, Conn.’s, Jared Walter was second with a 4-over 75, but the highlight of the day was when he aced the 140-yard No. 7 using a Taylor Made 9 iron and a Titleist Prov1x.   First alternate position went to Connor Piecuch of East Longmeadow High School. MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Middlebury College senior and Mount Greylock Regional School alumnus Tom Dils has been named a College Sports Information Directors of America District I First-Team Academic All-District selection.   Dils of Williamstown and his Middlebury teammate Adam Glaser each were recognized, the college announced on Friday.   The pair will be in action at Williams’ Cole Field on Saturday when the Panthers play the Ephs in the quarter-finals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship.   Dils currently boasts a 3.92 GPA as an English major.
