MEDFORD, Mass. – After an exciting and touchdown-heavy first half, the Tufts University Jumbos (3-2) on Saturday were able to outlast the Williams College Ephs (1-4), wining by a score of 27-20.

Jack Doll had himself a very impressive day passing for the Jumbos, completing 88 percent of his passes (21-for-24) on his way to 201 yards and two touchdowns. Doll’s favorite target was Zack Trause, who registered 7 completions for 58 yards receiving, while Jack Cooleen led the Jumbos in receiving yardage, with 102 on four catches. Chance Brady and Zack Trause split the Tufts rushing attack almost straight down the middle, with Brady recording 71 yards on 21 carries and Trause notching 70 yards on 15 touches. Trause also made appearances at quarterback, completing all four of his passes.

For the Ephs, Austin Lommen went 24-for-39  for 243 yards and three touchdowns, plus one interception. Alex Scyocurka led the Eph rushing attack, recording 45 yards on 18 carries, averaging only 2.5 yards per carry. Steven Kiesel caught 10 passes, including two in the end zone, on his way to 69 receiving yards, while Alex Way led the Ephs in receiving yardage with 77 on six receptions.

Next week, Williams will travel to Hamilton to take on the Continentals, while Tufts will try to defeat the Lord Jeffs at Amherst.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
SOMERVILLE, Mass. —An early tally from Kristi Kirshe and some stout defensive play in the second half lifted the Williams women's soccer team (11-1-0, 6-1-0 NESCAC) over Tufts (6-5-1, 2-5-1 NESCAC) on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the Ephs' fourth straight over Tufts, which last defeated Williams in 2006.

Kirshe scored just 4 minutes, 39 seconds into the match, powering home a cross from Mai Mitsuyama and punctuating an early offensive flurry for the Ephs, who carried play throughout the first half. The goal was Kirshe's ninth of the season, putting her one behind teammate Audrey Thomas for the conference lead. Kirshe and Thomas are also tied for the NESCAC lead with 21 points apiece.

With the win, the Ephs moved into a tie at the top of the NESCAC standings with idle Amherst, though the Jeffs hold the tiebreaker thanks to their win over Williams last month. The Ephs have three games remaining in their regular season, including Sunday's 2 p.m. tilt against Middlebury at Cole Field.

MEN'S SOCCER
SOMMERVILLE, Mass. -- Tufts defeated the Williams College men's soccer team, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Gus Santos converted a penalty kick for Tufts (8-1-3, 6-0-2 NESCAC) in the 66th minute.

Williams (7-5-1, 5-3) visits Bates on Monday.

CROSS COUNTRY
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Harriers from Amherst College and Wesleyan University traveled to Williamstown on Saturday for the annual Little Three Championship.

The 8-kilometer course at Mount Greylock Regional School was a little slow due to rain earlier in the week as well as morning showers.  But by the time the race began, the rain had ceased and the temperature of 55 degrees propelled the athletes to some great performances.

The Williams men have won 41 Little Three titles since 1970, including all of the past 26.  On Saturday, the Ephs continued their streak with a 27th straight victory.  They amassed only 19 points to Amherst’s 45, while Wesleyan finished in third with a score of 68.  Amherst’s lead runners took the race out at a brisk pace, but Williams’ front pack stayed patient.  Within two miles, the Ephs had closed the gap and at the three-mile mark only the Lord Jeff’s Mohamed Hussein stood among the pack of senior Colin Cotton, junior Bijan Mazaheri, senior captain Aldis Inde and freshman Ben Decker.  At the finish line, it was Cotton with the win in 25 minutes, 48 seconds followed by Mazaheri in 25:55.

Williams' women won with 19 points, ahead of Amherst's 43 and Wesleyan's 83. Freshman Anna Harleen won the individual crown with a time of 18:53, four seconds ahead of Amherst sophomore Savanna Gornisiewicz. Five more Ephs -- freshman Emily Sundquist, senior Talia Calnek-Sugin, sophomore Emma Zehner, junior Lacy Serletti and freshman Victoria Kingham -- finished in the top seven.

Next Saturday, the Ephs return to action on Mount Greylock's course in the Plansky Invitational.  Named in honor of the great Tony Plansky, this meet welcomes back alumni to compete in an open 5k race.  Then, on Nov. 1, the championship season kicks off at Middlebury College, where Williams’ top 12 runners will compete in the 2014 NESCAC Championships.

VOLLEYBALL
NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Williams College volleyball team (18-3, 7-1 NESCAC) swept Connecticut College (10-9, 4-4 NESCAC) in three sets this afternoon, downing the NESCAC team 25-22, 26-24, and 25-17.

The Ephs played an aggressive match and effectively bounced back after Friday night’s conference loss. Claire Miller and Tori Jasuta crushed double digit kills, each gathering 14 in all three sets. Each of these attackers also had impressive accuracy, as Jasuta earned a .357 hitting percentage and Miller .478. The Ephs saw a new face on the court, as middle blocker Shelby Fisher earned three kills for the team in addition to two blocks. On average, the Ephs racked up a .327 hitting percentage against Connecticut’s .167.

Williams also had a well spread defense, and the backline was defended by libero Caitie Bennell and Claire Miller with nine digs each, followed closely by Ryan Farley and Emily O’Day with 8 digs each. The frontline held a strong defense as well, with Raea Rasmussen contributing four blocks to the Ephs’ 12 total.

Connecticut College’s front line was powered by Ella Johnson with 10 kills and Andrea Mullaney who scored two blocks. Defense was spread between Cailyn Straubel and Caroline Martin, who each gathered seven digs.

The Ephs will continue their season at the Hall of Fame Tournament in Northampton Mass., next weekend. The tournament, hosted by Smith College, will hold matches for the Ephs against MIT on Friday, and against Trinity and Wheaton on Saturday.
