Williams Women Win NCAA Cross Country Title

WINNECONNE, Wis. -- Hannah Cole finished fourth to lad the Williams women's cross country team to a team championship at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday.
 
Cole ran the 6-kilometer course in a time of 21 minutes, 30 seconds, seven seconds behind winner Abrah Masterson of Cornell College.
 
The Ephs amassed 81 points, fewer than half as many as runner-up Genseo State (179).
 
The Williams men were a close second to Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which won the team title with 135 points.
 
The Ephs, led by Bijan Mazahri, compiled 144 points.
 
Mazaheri finished third with a time of 24:21. Winner Ian LaMere of Wisconsin-Plattville won in 23:35.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
GENEVA, N.Y. -- Kristina Alvarado scored twice to lead the Williams women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Stevens in the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday.
 
Natalie Turner-Wyatt set up Alvarado's first goal in the 13th minute. Early in the second half, Kristi Kirshe set up Alvarado for an insurance goal.
 
Stevens got on the board with about eight minutes left.
 
Tressa Palcheck stopped four shots to earn the win.
 
Williams (19-1-1) plays William Smith Sunday at 1 p.m. for a berth in the Final Four.
 
WRESTLING
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Stevens Institute won the Doug Parker Tournament with 162 points and the Ephs were second with 139 points.
 
In their first outing of the 2015-16 season the Ephs did have three wrestlers win titles on the day.
 
Senior Jorge Lopez at 157 won all five of his bouts to emerge as the champion of that weight class. Senior Tim Garripoli (165) followed up Lopez's championship run with one of his own. Junior Chris Chorzepa (184) was also perfect on the day and brought home the 184 title.
 
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- In its second meet of the weekend and the season, the Williams women's swim and dive team defeated Union College 218-66 this afternoon, bringing their record to 2-0.
 
As usual, the Eph women started the meet off with excitement, charging into the 200-yd medley relay. Williams finished in a 1-2-3 sweep, led by top relay members Anna Epstein, Megan Pierce, Emma Waddell, and Delaney Smith. The group posted an impressive 1:26.04, followed closely by the two other Williams teams.
 
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Head coach Steve  Kuster's team competed in their own pool for the first time this season as the Dutch of Union College came to visit.
 
The Ephs didn't look weary from the previous evening's competition in the 200 medley relay, the first event contested . The top four finishes all belonged to a relay team from Williams. The first-place team of Timothy Kostolansky, Jake Tamposi, Alex McCarter and Jamie Finnegan finished in a time of 1:32.95, which would have finished fifth at last year's NESCAC Championships.
 
WOMEN'S HOCKEY
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Hamilton scored in the third period to hand Williams (1-1) a 1-0 loss on Saturday.
 
Christina Cleroux stopped 17 shots for Williams.
 
MEN'S HOCKEY
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Noah King stopped 30 shots to lead the Williams men's hockey team to a 4-1 win over Bowdoin on Saturday.
 
George Hunkele, David Italiano, James McNamara and Tyler Young each scored for the Ephs (1-0).
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Cole Teal scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Williams men's basketball tam to a 69-62 win over Mount St. Vincent in the championship game of the Williams Inviational on Saturday.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Katie Litman scored 16 points, and Oge Uwanaka grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Williams to a 68-53 win over Wheaton on Saturday in the first game of the Williams Invitational
 
Williams (1-0) plays Babson on Sunday at 3 at Chandler Gymnasium.
