GENEVA, N.Y.— The Williams College women's soccer team on Sunday advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four by beating William Smith on penalty kicks after playing the Herons to a 1-1 tie.

The Ephs (19-1-2) got on the scoreboard early. Kristi Kirshe pushed a short pass ahead inside the box to Audrey Thomas. Thomas put her shot from right in front into the back of the net to give Williams a 1-0 advantage just 7 minutes, 31 seconds in. It was just the sixth goal William Smith has allowed all season.

The Herons (19-1-2) had a number of close calls to tie the game up, controlling the momentum of the game and out-shooting the Ephs, 8-3 in the first half and 8-5 in the second. It wasn't until the 86th minute that a header by junior Shay Callahan tied the game up. It came after a William Smith corner and senior Zoe Jackson Gibson earned the assist on the game-tying goal. It was Callahan's fourth goal this year.

The Herons logged a 3-1 advantage in shots in the first overtime and a 3-2 edge in the second overtime period. In the final seconds of the first overtime, the Herons earned a corner kick, but the attempt was punched away by the Williams keeper. One of William Smith's best scoring chances came 5:35 into the second overtime. The Herons earned a free kick just outside of the box. Junior Emma Diehl drilled her shot on goal, but Williams' goalkeeper Tressa Palcheck just got a hand on the ball to make the stop.

Williams had a chance for the game winner in the 108th minute. Kirshe broke through with Audrey Thomas. Thomas dished to Kirshe, but she fired her shot just wide of the left post. The Herons finished with a 13-2 advantage in corners. First-year Veronica Romines played all 110 minutes in goal for William Smith and made five saves. Palcheck played 110 minutes for Williams and made seven saves, but Olivia Barnhill came in to face the penalty kicks for the Ephs.

The Ephs connected on all three of their penalty kicks to advance to the national semifinals, 3-0. Barnhill saved two of the Herons' kicks, while Romines stopped one of Williams' shots.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.- Devon Caveney made two key free throws with 25 seconds left in the second half to clinch Williams’ 52-47 win over Babson.
