WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Willliams College women’s hockey team fell to the Trinity College Bantams in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC championship, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Williams (12-12-1) was ranked fourth and Trinity (15-8-2) seeded fifth the tournament. This is the third time the two teams have played in the quarterfinal round of the championship. Trinity beat Williams last year, 1-0, and went on to win the tournament while Williams beat Trinity, 3-2, the year before, also going on to win the title.

The Ephs came out of the box strong with an early goal at 1:54 into the first period. The puck hit a funny partition on the boards and senior Natalie Bernsteinwas there to slide it past Trinity goaltender, sophomore Sydney Belinskas. This was Bernstein's fifth goal of the season; she was assisted by senior Michaela Levine.

The rest of the period played pretty evenly with both teams making good offensive rushes and solid defensive plays to keep the score 1-0 going into the second period.

Williams sophomore Alex Lovaas's late first period checking penalty was carried over from the first period and Trinity quickly capitalized on this opportunity, scoring in the first minute of the second at 0:57. Assisted by senior Cheeky Herr, senior Emma Tani caught the side netting for her ninth goal of the year.

Neither team could set up successful offensive plays with both defensive lines and goaltenders playing strong. The Ephs had three power play opportunities but couldn't convert on any of them. Williams led in shots on goal 21 to 13 at the end of the second.

In the third period, Williams netminder Cleroux and Trinity's Belinskas made strong saves, keeping both teams above water. Both offensive lines were sharp during the third period but, again, neither could finish off the shots sending the game into over-time.

Overtime began with both teams coming out of the locker room fired up and getting early shots off but, ultimately, Trinity's senior Shannon Farrell, assisted by sophomore Hannah Oganeku, scored the winning goal at 9:23 into overtime, sending the Bantams to the semifinals.

"We played an unbelievable first period and came out strong," head coach Meghan Gillis said. "Every time we've done that, we've won those games but we had a couple of bad bounces and only gave up very few chances, which happened to be in overtime and that was tough."

Men’s Hockey

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Tufts men’s hockey team defeated Williams, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Lansing Chapman Rink in the first round of the conference playoffs.

The Ephs (18-5-2) got the first goal of the game early in the second period, but the Jumbos (10-9-6) subsequently scored two unanswered goals to advance to the semi-final round.

Women’s Squash

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Williams College women’s squash team fell to Darthmouth Saturday, 7-2, in the semifinals of the Kurtz Cup. The Ephs previously fell to Dartmouth 5-4 in the regular season, and despite fighting hard today against them and showing a lot of spirit, they did not manage to pull of a win.

The match followed the three-court system, with No. 9 Caroline Hogan, No. 6 Ellen Coombe and co-captain No. 3 Nicole Feshbach. Coombe played hard, but eventually fell to her opponent in three games. Hogan and Feshbach both took their opponents to five games, but fell in the fifth, making the score 3-0 to Dartmouth.

Next on court were No. 8 Charlotte Walsh, No. 5 Esther Baek and No. 2 Hayley Parsons. Baek had extremely close games with her opponent, taking her to tiebreakers twice, but eventually fell in three games. Walsh and Parsons both played excellent squash to dominate their opponents in three games, making the score 4-2 to Dartmouth.

Last on court were co-captain No. 7 Lily Grant, No 4 Ananya Mahalingam-Dhingra and No. 1 Nicole Friedman. Grant followed the example of her teammates and fought hard against a difficult opponent, but eventually fell in a five-game match. Mahalingam-Dhingra and Friedman both took a game of their Dartmouth opponents, but eventually fell in four games.
