WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williams College men’s hockey team that finished first in the NESCAC in regular season play has been selected to play in the 2016 NCAA Tournament that begins March 12.
The 2015-16 season marked the first time that Williams (18-5-2) has finished with the best regular season record in NESCAC play.
This will be the Ephs' first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament that currently consists of just 11 teams.
"I'm just really excited for our program," Williams coach Bill Kangas said. "I was just reflecting on all of the prior teams and all of the prior coaches who contributed to this process. It took us until 2016 to get here and I'm grateful for all of the work and support we have received from the college and the community. It took everyone's best effort."
Williams will face MASCAC champion Salem State (22-5-0) in Lansing Chapman Rink on Saturday, March 12, at a time to be determined.
Last week in the final public rankings by the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Committee the Ephs were ranked second in the East (out of 10 teams) behind Hobart.
Williams closed out the 2015-16 season by winning 13 of its last 16 games, losing two and tying once.
The winner of the Salem State vs. Williams game will take on the winner of the SUNY Geneseo vs. Salve Regina contest next Saturday.
