PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. -- The Lanesborough Bulldogs 12-and-under Cal Ripken Baseball team opened the 2016 season by helping to christen the new Cal Ripken Experience park in the Smoky Mountains.

The Bulldogs went 1-2 on the weekend against teams from Chicago, Tennessee and Ohio.

They opened the weekend with a 17-8 win over the WDS Thunder of Chicago.

“We really took advantage when we got runners on,” Bulldogs coach Rick Paris said. “We put pressure on them and forced errors by stealing and being very aggressive on the basepaths.”

Lanesborough also used an inside-the-park home run by Josh Polumbo, who hit a line drive into the right-center gap of the Camden Yards field, where the fence is 335 feet in center field.

Polumbo drove in three runs, and Landen Jamula struck out five in three innings of work. Roberto Barron threw two innings in the win.

In the second game, a 4-2 loss to the Tennessee Bash, the Bulldogs were hampered by early baserunning mistakes. Two Lanesborough players were picked off at second base.

“Then we had two hard-hit balls to the outfield that ended up being putouts at first when the outfielder’s throw beat our runners at first,” Paris said. “Playing on AstroTurf is just a big different than some of the boys are used to. Hard shots to the outfield don’t guarantee a hit if the outfielder has a strong arm.”

Barron drove in a run and Polumbo and Alex Axt combined to allow four runs on the hill.

On Sunday, Lanesborough finished with an 8-6 loss to the Butler County Bombers of Hamilton, Ohio.

This time, Barron hit an inside-the-park homer; he also struck out three on the mound.

“There were some Texas Leaguers that we just couldn’t get to, but our kids played really well,” Paris said.

“It was a very fun and exciting weekend.”
