WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- On Friday, the Williamstown Police advanced to the Berkshire County Cal Ripken Baseball Championship game with a walk-off home run.

On Saturday, Police built a 4-2 lead with just one ball hit out of the infield.

Meanwhile, Jack Cangelosi and Alexander Axt combined for nine strikeouts on the mound to lead Police to a 7-2 win over South County’s Fox Homes.

WPD, which lost just one game this season, bounced back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 with an offense keyed by heads-up baserunning.

“Our kids have great baseball IQ,” Police coach Gary Polumbo said. “They know the game. They know how to run the bases. They know how to take advantage of different situations. They know how to put pressure on the defense.”

Panayiotis Constantopoulos gave the visitors the early lead with a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the second, Thomas Martin drew a walk to lead off the inning. He moved up on a wild pitch, stole third and came home on a passed ball to tie the game.

Fox Homes used a little small ball of its own to take back its lead in the fourth.

Ethan LeChance reached on a one-out infield single and stole second. He then used a passed ball and a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game.

In the bottom of the frame, Jack Gitterman led off with a walk and stole second. He then stole third and came home to tie it when the throw down skipped into left field.

Martin and Cangelosi drew back-to-back walks and scored on a combination of passed balls and errors to make it 4-2.

In the fifth, WPD broke out the bats.

It started when Austin Buda bunted his way on base to start the inning. Afer Constantopoulos got the first out on a swinging strike, Oscar Low doubled to center to drive in Buda. Then, with two out, Gitterman launched a homer to right center to score Low and make it 7-2.

Fox Homes got one aboard in the top of the sixth, but Williamstown Police ended the game on an outfield assist from Low in center.

An emotional Polumbo passed out trophies to his team, noting that he coached a number of the players for several years.

“Fantastic group of kids,” he said later. “These kids, we work out all winter. They’re really dedicated to the game of baseball and dedicated to each other. If one kid doesn’t have a great game, the next kid picks him up.

“Just a fantastic group - strong-knit group. The work really hard and play really well.”
