The Ephs (2-3) dropped their first three matches in the tournament and were down 2-0 after two sets but came back to win, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-12.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Williams’ women's cross country opened its season early with a win at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational, hosted by Vassar College.

The Ephs placed first in the field of 15 teams with a score of 41 points. The women from the Stevens Institute (74 points) and RPI (112 points) placed second and third, respectively.

Amy Regan from the Stevens Institute was the individual race winner, claiming victory for the third straight year with a time of 18 minutes, 04 seconds on the 5-kilometer course. Regan, who won the 2014 NCAA championship race, will be a runner to beat this season.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. —The Williams men’s cross country team started its competitive season at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational, hosted by Vassar College, returning to this meet after a four-year hiatus.

The Ephs faced competition from several area colleges, including nationally ranked RPI (24th) and NYU (29th). This six-kilometer race was shorter than the usual distance at which the Ephs compete, but when coupled with unusually hot and humid weather, it provided a good test of the athletes' early season fitness.

Williams performed well, scoring 34 points

After a conservative first half of the race, Williams made a strong surge up the largest hill on the course and moved through the field, with Peter Hale and Ben Decker battling for the lead. Ultimately, NYU’s Jorge Maldonado pulled away over the last 600 meters to win in 19:08. Decker followed with a strong close in 19:19.8 for 2nd, joined shortly thereafter by Hale in 3rd in 19:23.6.
