Pittsfield's Patti Helps College Team Win League Title

It is championship time for college athletes in fall sports, and Berkshire County products are contributing for their teams throughout New England and beyond.

 

On Saturday, the Wentworth College women’s soccer team won the Commonwealth Coast Conference title with a 4-0 win over Gordon, and sophomore Taylor Patti again helped contribute to the shutout in the back.

 

Patti has appeared in 14 games this fall for the Leopards (15-3-3). The team has allowed just 13 goals for a .60 goals against average.
 
Sophomore Amanda Wright (Pittsfield) assisted on the goal in Springfield College’s regular season finale, a 1-0 win over Wellesley, and she appeared in both the Pride’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic conference playoff games. Springfield lost, 1-0, to Worcester Polytechnic in the NEWMAC semi-finals on Saturday. Wright appeared in 17 games for the 11-5-3 Pride with a goal and two assists.
 
Freshman Jocelyn Hill (Wahconah) appeared in 18 games with 15 starts for the Westfield State women’s soccer team, which Friday finished the year at 8-7-3 when it was eliminated on penalty kicks in the semi-finals of the MASCAC tournament.
 
The MCLA women’s soccer team went 3-9-4 this fall. Wahconah grad Marisa Sprague was the team’s third-leading scorer with two goals, and Hoosac Valley grad Megan Richardson appeared in 16 games with 15 starts, compiling a save percentage of .865. MCLA also got contributions from Pittsfield alumna Aleah Sangiovanni, Drury grad Kayla Vivori and BArT’s Ciera Dowling.
 
MCLA’s men’s soccer team bowed out of the MASCAC tournament in the quarter-finals. Sophomore midfielder Khalil Kareh (Hoosac Valley) finished with 17 appearances and one assist for the 8-8-1 Trailblazers. Freshman middie Jeremy Schnopp (Lenox Memorial) appeared in two games.
 
Wahconah graduate Kevin Boino has appeared in 10 games with eight starts this fall with the UMass men’s soccer team, which is 6-7-3 going into its regular season finale against Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday.
 
McCann Tech’s Shane Fuller has appeared in eight games this fall for the College of St. Rose men’s soccer team, including its season finale, a 2-0 loss to nationally ranked Adelphi.
 
Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jake Benzinger, a Mount Greylock graduate, contributed to a big win for the Wake Forest football team on Saturday as the Deamon Deacons beat Virginia, 27-20, to improve to 6-3 (3-2 ACC) and make themselves eligible for a bowl game. Wake Forest travels to Louisville on Saturday for a game scheduled to be telecast on ESPN2.
 
At DIII Westfield State, Evan Garvey (Wahconah) and the Owls are 2-7 going into Friday night’s senior game against Western Connecticut State. Garvey is the team’s leading receiver with 30 catches for 384 yards (12.80 yards per catch), and a pair of touchdowns. He also has returned nine kicks for an average of 21 yards per attempt.
 
Freshman defensive lineman Matt Heppleston (Lee High football team, Lenox Memorial) picked up his second tackle of the season for Minnesota’s Macalester College on Oct. 29 in a win over Cornell College. Macalaster (7-2) finishes on Saturday against St. Norbert.
 
The Springfield College football team won its home finale on Saturday, a 24-7 win over Rensselaer, and Pittsfield High grad Dominic Traversa led the Pride’s defense with 12 tackles, including two tackles for a loss. Traverse has 72 tackles and one interception this fall for Springfield (5-4), which finishes at the Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. Freshman QB Chad Shade has 212 yards rushing in five appearances for the Pride.
 
The UMass Dartmouth men’s golf team wrapped up its fall season with a 15th-place finish in a 22-team Division III field at the New England Golf Association Championship on Cape Cod. Lenox graduate Jared Fadding scored for the Corsairs with a two-round score of 165 on the par-72 Captains Course in Brewster.
 
Pittsfield’s Madeline Roulier (St. Joseph) helped lead the Daniel Webster volleyball team to a 22-8 record in a season that ended Sunday with a 3-0 loss to Regis in the New England Collegiate Conference final. Roulier had 218 kills and a .154 hitting percentage with a team-high 324 digs.
 
At Saturday’s ECAC Championships, Husson College senior and Mount Greylock graduate Stephanie Adamczyk placed 87th to help her team finish in 11th place. Hudson is scheduled to run on Saturday at the NCAA Division III regional at Stanley Park in Westfield.
 
That meet will be hosted by the Westfield State Owls, whose women won the MASCAC Championships on Oct. 29. Freshman Michaela Grady of Pittsfield competed for Westfield State in that meet, hosted by Fitchburg State.
 
Hartford junior Heather Hassett (Monument Mountain) will be heading to New York City on Friday as her team participates in the Division I NCAA Regional at Van Cortlandt Park.
 
Georgetown University's men's cross country team goes to State College, Pa., for its NCAA Regional. Two weekends ago, the Hoyas won the Big East title behind a second-place performance by 2013 Lenox grad Scott Carpenter.
