Nominations sought: The Peacemaker Award is given annually to an individual or group in Northern Berkshire. The award, which originated as part of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, is made to persons who have contributed substantially to peace in our region. In general, the Peacemaker Award recognizes persons who have a history of working with people and/or neighborhoods and communities to provide for greater tolerance, understanding, and caring. While the award may be made to a person or group well known in the region, those making nominations are particularly urged to consider those who have worked hard and have made contributions without much recognition.

Past Peacemakers include Mark Rondeau, Mark Lincourt, Pastor Dave Anderson, Al & Cindi McLain, and PopCares, Inc.

The MLK Jr. Day of Service Committee is also seeking new members interested in helping to plan the January 2017 event. To join the committee, please call Liz Boland at 413-663-7588, ext. 19. To nominate a Peacemaker, pick up a form at the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition office at 61 Main S., Suite 218, North Adams or nominate online. Nominations must be received by Dec. 1.

Books needed: The Friends of Milne Public Library is accepting new or gently used book and media donations for its annual used book sale through March. Donations can be dropped off at the Milne during regular library hours. For more information about donation guidelines, visit the Friends’ website.

The 2017 book sale, silent auction, café and bake sale will be held Friday and Saturday, April 21-22. For more information or to volunteer, email friends@milnelibraryfriends.org. The annual event generates funds to support children’s programming, staff development and technology at the library.

Feeling inspired: In a colorful, well-lit studio in Housatonic, artist Deb Koffman teaches mindfulness through drawing, hosts IWOW Open Mic night on the first Tuesday of the month, and quietly churns out thousands of "Soul Support"” cards. The size of a pack of gum, each Soul Support package contains 42 different handwritten messages on colorful cardstock designed to comfort the soul, expand awareness and get unstuck.  The inspirational messages are used by artists, writers, teachers, coaches, healing centers, meditators, yoga practitioners and therapists for everything from pain relief and energy work to mindfulness practice and guidance.

The instructions suggest putting Soul Support cards in drawers, pockets, friend's pockets, or anywhere that supports your soul. Choose one or more and wholeheartedly DO what the card suggests. Koffman hopes the sale of these items will help fund a series of mindfulness workshops for the community. These tiny packages of inspiration make great stocking stuffers. A pack of Soul Support cards retails for $6.50 and are available locally at One Mercantile in Great Barrington, Kripalu in Stockbridge and online.
