Kevin Quinto competes for Pittsfield High School last fall.

AMHERST, Mass. -- Kevin Quinto fired a 4-over-par round of 74 Thursday to qualify for the Massachusetts Junior Amateur.

Quinto finished with three birdies on the back nine at Amherst Golf Club to finish in the top four in the final qualifier for the event, scheduled for July 31-Aug. 2 at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley.

On Thursday, Quinto, a recent Pittsfield High graduate, got off to a rough start, bogeying the first hole and carding a double bogey on the 375-yard, par-4 second en route to a 5-over 40 at the turn.

But he righted the ship with a birdie on the 350-yard, par-4 11th hole, and he recorded two more birdies on par 4 against two bogeys to go 1-under on the back nine and 4-under for the day.

That tied Quinto, who plays at Berkshire Hills Country Club, for first place at the qualifier alongside Jonathan Farrell, whose home course is Springfield Country Club.

Two golfers tied for third at 5-over-par.

Twenty-one players competed in the event, including Berkshire County's Tenley Smith (Taconic Golf Club,Mount Greylock) and Matthew Shields (Stockbridge Country Club, Lenox HIgh).
