PITTSFIELD, MASS. -- The Berkshire Force 12-and-under softball team jumped out to a five-run lead after two innings and held off Dalton for an 9-3 win in the Berkshire County Championship at the Doyle Complex.

Maddie Ladowski scattered six hits and struck out five to earn the win in the circle, and Abby Lummus went 2-for-4 with a triple and four runs scored as the Force won a four-team tournament that got under way on Wednesday.

The big blow came from Mia Alfonso, who delivered a bases clearing three-run single to make it 5-0 in the bottom of the second. But the Force got at least one hit from seven different players.

“This team, we’re really interchangeable,” Force coach Chris Malumphy said. “The kids who come off the bench could really be starting for any team in this county, honestly.

“Mia [Alfonso] as a three hitter has carried us this year -- a lot of RBIs, a lot of extra base hits. We expect that from her.”

Alfonso had an RBI groundout in the first inning, plating Sophia Santos, who led off the inning with an infield single, stole second, moved up Lummus’ single and scored to make it 1-0. Lummus came home on a wild pitch to give the Force a 2-0 lead.

In the second, an error, a hit batter and a bunt single by Brodie Rosier set the table for Alfonso, whose hit to left-center made it a five-run game.

In the third, Dalton responded with an Danni Barry RBI single to score Olivia Iovieno. Ella Quinto’s RBI groundout drove in Amber Brown, who pinch ran for Casey Wilson after she singled up the middle.

Lena Ungewitter scored on Kamryn Sweet’s groundout for the Force to get one run back and make it 6-2 in the bottom of the third.

But Dalton answered when Lily Robb doubled to center, moved up on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch to get her team back within three runs.

But the Force added two in the fourth thanks to RBIs from Chloe Wendling and Emma Newberry and one in the sixth when Lummus tripled and scored on Wendling’s sacrifice fly.

That sac fly provided one of several defensive highlights for Dalton when Brown made a diving catch on a line drive to center.

Earlier in the game, Hannah Connelly made a diving catch on a fly ball to center to help limit the damage in the second.

“I tip my cap to this Dalton team,” Malumphy said. “This is the best outfielding game against us this year. We’re accustomed to hitting the ball in the gaps, but they covered so much ground. They played like a high school team today.

“I know a lot of these girls. I’ve coached against them for a lot of years. I’m really proud of this Dalton team -- good group of girls also.”

As, of course, are Malumphy’s Force players.

“It’s a great group of kids,” he said. “They get along great. They play hard, and they practice hard. It’s really what you do in practice is what happens out here. It all translates.”
