No taxation without ...: The state government voted not to have a tax-free weekend, so Carr Hardware has decided to revolt and have their own tax-free holiday. Therefore, Carr Hardware announces the "Tax Free Revolution" this upcoming weekend, Aug. 19 and 20, at each of their four stores in the Berkshires.

For the second year in row, Massachusetts cancelled the No Sales Tax Holiday. For many years, consumers anxiously wait until the third weekend in August to make significant purchases and avoid paying state sales tax. The weekend traditionally not only saves money for shoppers but also gives them the pleasure of not having to pay the tax man in Boston.

Carr locations in Pittsfield, North Adams, Lee and Great Barrington will all join in the celebration. Carr will discount all purchases to offset the state sales tax during the No Sales Tax Revolution Sale.

Wait, there's more: The state may not be holding the annual Tax Free Weekend, but retailers in Lenox have banded together to still offer that great discount to shoppers this weekend. Many Lenox retail stores will be offering a discount equal to the state's sales tax of 6.25 percent on all purchases that are subject to the sales tax on both Saturday and Sunday.

The downtown Lenox businesses that are confirmed to be taking part include:

  • MacKimmie Co.
  • Scott Barrow Photography
  • Art and Chocolate
  • Lenox Print and Mercantile
  • Nejaime's Wine Cellar
  • Wit Gallery
  • Design Menagerie
  • Lenoxology Store
  • Berkshire Poster
  • Purple Plume
  • Casablanca
  • Shooze
  • Sweatrz
  • Willowbrook

More businesses may be added and an updated list can be found online.

Manage your money: Berkshire Community College is offering a free course to students that will help them achieve a level of financial independence, thanks to a partnership with Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. The free course will be offered this fall at the South County Center on Main Street in Great Barrington from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays or on the Main Campus in Pittsfield on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Fall classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The three-credit course, called BUS 139 – Money Management for Life, will cover strategies to help students manage budgets, expenses and debt; save and invest for the future; plan for the unexpected; and establish personal financial plans to achieve their goals. The course helps educate and arm students with the critical skills and knowledge they need to manage their personal finances throughout the various stages of their lives.
