Williams Volleyball, Women's Soccer and Field Hockey All Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –– The Williams College volleyball team had an exciting second day of the Union Invitational and won games against Skidmore (2-5) and SUNY Oneonta (4-5).
 
On Friday, Williams (2-3) lost a five-set battle against host Union College (2-6) with the set scores 27-25, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25, and 13-15 and went on to be swept by Stevens with the set scores 25-12, 25-21, and 25-17.
 
The first game on Saturday was an early morning match-up against Skidmore (2-5).Williams maintained strong defense and aggressive offensive systems. Williams successfully swept Skidmore in three sets with the set scores 25-18, 25-13, and 25-21.
 
Sophomore Setter Alex Newton recorded a hitting percentage of .667 with 4 kills and 6 total attacks. Newton also showcased strong defensive skills and recorded 11 digs. Sophomore Natalie Albright had a hitting percentage of .583 with 12 total attacks and 8 kills. Junior Tess Richman had a hitting percentage of .556 and 6 kills. Sophomore Erin Denham had a hitting percentage of .267 and 12 kills. The Skidmore match provided the Ephs with energy as they went into their second match of their double-header.
  
After sweeping Skidmore in three sets, Williams hoped to keep up the energy in their afternoon game against SUNY Oneonta. Williams was able to win the first set 25 to 17. However, Oneonta took control of the second set and won 25 to 13.
 
The third set proved to be a decisive switch in momentum and Williams won 25 to 20. The Ephs won the final set 25 to 19 and won the match in four sets. Erin Denham had a notable hitting percentage of .345 with 13 kills and 29 total attacks. Alex Newton also recorded three kills. Tess Richman earned 5 kills and had a percentage of .273.
 
Next week, the Ephs have their first home game in Chandler of the 2017 season. They play NESCAC rival Wesleyan (Conn.) on Friday night at 8 p.m. and Connecticut College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Evan Gancedo and Alison Lu scored Saturday to give the Williams women's soccer team a 2-0 win over Trinity.
 
Olivia Barnhill stopped four shots to earn the shutout in goal.
 
Seventh-ranked Williams (2-0, 2-0 NESCAC) travels to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Sunday to face Skidmore.
 
FIELD HOCKEY
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Alex Bennett scored two goals and assisted on a third on Saturday to lead the 19th-ranked Williams field hockey team to a 3-2 won iver No. 7 Trinity.
 
Emma Santucci made six saves to earn the win in goal.
 
The Ephs (1-0) are home against Mount Holyoke on Wednesday evening.
