WILLLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- Lauren Vostal and Amanni Fernandez each scored 15 points Friday to lead the Williams College women's basketball team to a 69-64 win over Wesleyan in the teams' NESCAC season opener.
Vostal hit a pair of free throws to break a 61-61 tie with three minutes left and made a layup with an assist from Gabby Martin on Williams' next possession to establish a lead the Ephs (9-4) never relinquished.
Kristin Fechtelkotter scored 13 for Williams.
Wesleyan (8-3) was led by Olivia Gorman, who scored a game-high 20.
Williams hosts Conn College on Saturday.
Men's Basketball
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Bobby Casey scored 23 points to lead the Williams men to a 76-68 overtime win to hand Wesleyan its first loss of the season in the teams' NESCAC season opener.
Williams (9-2) trailed, 39-32, at half-time and faced a 60-52 deficit with 8 minutes, 29 seconds left.
Casey hit a layup and a 3-pointer to get the deficit down to 60-54. With 6:04 left, he hit a triple to get Williams within one at 60-59.
James Heskett's 3 gave Williams a 62-60 lead with 4:49 left, but the Cardinals' basket with 2:55 on the clock was all the offense either side could generate the rest of regulation.
In OT, Casey hit a pair of 3s to give Williams a 70-64 lead with 1:05 on the clock, and the Ephs were able to close the game out at the foul line.
Heskett finished with 16 points for Williams.
Wesleyan (9-1) got a game-high 28 from Jordan Bonner.
Williams, which avenged one of its two losses with the victory, goes to Conn College on Saturday.
Women's Hockey
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Williams' Candace Lu scored her first two goals of the season to lead the Ephs to a 5-2 win over Bowdoin.
Williams (6-3-2) hosts Bowdoin again on Saturday afternoon.
