SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- The Greylock boys seventh- and eighth-grade boys travel basketball team wrapped up its season by Adams, 57-53, in the championship game of the Grap Passetto Memorial Tournament at the Berkshire School.

 

“This weekend was a great way to go out,” Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “Originally we were possibly not going to play in the tournament but decided to play in the end, which ended up paying off. We were without our big Thomas Martin for the entire pool play as he was still recovering from his knee injury which he hurt during the county championships.

 

“He may not score a lot but he’s a huge part of our defense and rebounding. After going 2-1 in pool play, taking a tough loss to Adams in our final pool game, Thomas decided to give it a go in the semis versus North Adams. What a difference it made inside.”

 

Adams was the top seed out of the White Pool with a 3-0 record in pool play; Greylock finished with the second seed out of the four-team pool. North Adams went 3-0 in pool play to capture the top seed in the Maroon Pool, where host Housatonic was the No. 2 seed.

 

Pool Play

Greylock 57, Lenox 39

Derek Paris scored 24, and Jackson Shelsy added nine on three 3-pointers to get Greylock off to a good start in the tournament. Eric Shove scored 10 to lead Lenox.

 

Greylock 51, Mount Everett 33

Paris scored 20, and Chase Doyle had 12 for Greylock. Justin Foster and Reece Mullen led Mount Everett with 10 and seven, respectively.

 

Adams 54, Greylock 44

Carson Meczywor scored a game-high 24, and Kobe Valois added 10 for Adams. Greylock got 24 points from Paris and nine from Tate Kuster.

 

Semi-Final

Greylock 43, North Adams 29

Paris scored 27, Doyle added seven, and Martin’s return helped anchor a strong effort from Greylock’s defense. Anthony Pettegill led North Adams with 11 points.

 

Championship Game

Greylock 57, Adams  53

Paris scored 24, and Martin and Chase Doyle each had eight for Greylock. Meczywor scored 25, and Valois had 12 for Adams.

 

“It was a back and forth matchup with us taking the lead at half by a score 24-20,” Rick Paris said. “Then in the third, where we usually struggle a bit, we outscored Adams, 20-15. In the fourth, we stretched the lead to 12 but as Adams always does they went on a run started by their three-quarter court pressure. It caused some turnovers as Adams brought it within three but Chase Doyle, Derek Paris and Thomas Martin each hit 1 of 2 from the line to stretch the lead to six, and at the same time Carson fouled out with less than a minute left. 

 

“At that point the pressure was off, and we were able to hang on. Carson is just a tough player and too many times I’ve seen him hit clutch shot after shot.”

 

“All weekend, as all year, Derek came up huge for us, averaging about 24 per game but more impressive was his defense.. He was just relentless, he was everywhere, stealing, rebounding, and just going coast to coast. He has a motor that never stops.”
