HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Tomas Adelsteinsson's Williams College women's golf team rallied on the back nine in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, erasing a 10-shot Claremont Mudd Scripps (CMS) lead at the turn to finish in a tie for first place with CMS at 311.

Williams and CMS each finished 19-over-par and 10 shots ahead of the nearest of 23 competitors.

Tied for third pace at the end of the first day were Carnegie Mellon (10th seed), Carleton College (15th seed), and NYU (3rd seed) at 321.

In Tuesday’s opening round of play the Ephs were paired with CMS and Whitman College.

Both Williams and CMS went off in the morning from the 10th tee at the El Campeon Golf Course, which is a 5,804-yard, layout with a par of 73. At the turn CMS had established a 10-shot lead over the Ephs.

No. 2 seeded CMS led after the first nine holes, posting an impressive team total of just two over par.

Florida native Holly Davenport led the Ephs through the first nine holes, shooting a 1-over 38. Davenport shook off a rocky first ever start in the national tourney opening double bogey, bogey on her first two holes by carding three birdies when she made the turn.

Senior Liz Gudas was 2-over at the turn after playing even par through the first six holes.

Junior Cordelia Chan was 3-over after the first nine holes, having started at 1-under par through the first five holes. Senior Phoebe Mattana and Isabella Wang each were 6-over, creating the Ephs' plus-12 at the turn.

Williams was seeded fourth entering the tournament.

On the Ephs' back nine, which was the front nine of the course, Chan fired a 1-under 35, Davenport shot 1-over and Gudas came in 2-over, giving the Ephs three players who finished at 3-over par or better. Mattana and Wang again mirrored each other by finishing 6-over on the final nine holes and each were 132 over on the day.

The Ephs posted three of the top five scores on the day with Chan and Davenport each shooting 75  (tie-2nd) and Liz Gudas' 76 slots her in fifth place.

"I hit the ball really well and actually managed to hit 16 greens in regulation today," Gudas said. "My putting was a little shaky on the front but improved a lot on the back. I'm happy the team came through on the last five holes and I'm excited for the rest of the week.”

After her solid debut effort in the NCAA Tournament Davenport said, "The best part of my game today was most definitely my putter. I sunk a lot of putts today and it was really cool to have five birdies. Going into tomorrow, I really just want to play steady and focus on every shot. Fairway, then green, then one or two put. One step at a time."

"We left a lot of shots out there today, but the women were disciplined with their games, and fought hard for every shot,” Adelsteinsson said. “That resulted in competitive scores today, and tomorrow we get to go out there and do a little bit better."

Wednesday, the Ephs will go off the first tee beginning at 1:20 p.m., and they will again be paired with CMS and Whitman College.
