NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Officially, the road to Curry Hicks Cage starts in November when high school basketball season practices begin.

Realistically, it is a process.

“That’s what everybody else sees: when we come back in November for tryouts,” Drury rising senior Reece Racette said after his team Thursday won the John Giorgi Summer Basketball League title. “This group right here is a special group. I think we’ve got guys who love the game, and that’s why we had them out here playing in the summer.

“For us, it doesn’t stop. Everybody moves on to their [fall] season, but we’ve got a group that wants to get all the way to the top. We’ve got the mindset of playing all year round and being the best we can possibly be in November and December so we’re prepared to be where we want to be.”

Racette scored a game-high 20 points Thursday to lead Drury to an 88-45 win over Mount Greylock.

He also grabbed nine rebounds and was named the league’s most valuable player.

On Thursday, he scored six points in a a 15-0 run early that helped the Blue Devils grab a 17-3 lead.

Hunter Sarkis (18 points) got things started with a 3-pointer on an assist from Scott McGuire to give Drury a 5-3 lead. Racette and big man Tim Brazeau did the rest of the damage, with McGuire (14 points) recording four assists in the run.

Mount Greylock made a little run to get within 12 at 21-9 after Michael Wellspeak (team-high 11) knocked down a 3-pointer and Zeke Locklear converted a feed from Toby Foehl in the post.

But Drury went on a 16-2 run to open a 37-11 lead and never looked back.

Jude Collins scored 14 for Drury, doing most of his damage in the second half with four 3-pointers. Obilio Rodriguez had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Brazeau finished with 10 points.

For Mount Greylock, Foehl scored nine and Locklear added eight.

It was a 31-point game at half-time, and Drury came out hard to open the second half -- pulling ahead, 67-24, after back-to-back transition baskets by Racette and Sarkis.

Although the game was never close, the Blue Devils never took their foot off the gas, running the court at every opportunity -- even on a night when each team only had one substitute at its disposal.

“I had a talk with coach [Al] Giorgi the other day, and he just kept telling us we’ve got to worry about ourselves no matter what,” Racette said. “I’ve been keeping on my guys about that. No matter what the score is, if we’re on the court and we’re playing basketball, there’s an opportunity to be getting better.

“So there’s no reason for us not to take advantage of that and be getting better every time we play.”

Giorgi League play concludes next week with the playoffs in the men’s and women’s divisions. On Sunday at Noel Field, it’s the men’s division semi-finals starting at 6:30 p.m. The Celtics play Outlook Builders/Pizza House in the opener, and Kingsbread/Flynn & Dagnoli takes on Yard Work by Dan in the nightcap.
