WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Lutz, Fla.'s, Joe Alfieri Thursday won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier at Waubeeka Golf Links.
Lutz carded a 5-under-par 66 to lead a 53-player field and earn one of four spots available Thursday to the USGA's Mid-Am Championship next month in Charlotte, N.C.
David Spitz of Weymouth placed second at 3-under, and Kingston's' Herbie Aitkens was third at 2-under. Ryan Kohler of Chesterfield, N.H., grabbed the qualifier's fourth spot with an even-par round of 71.
Two players, Cambridge's James Pleat and Amherst's Ronald Laverdiere, were named alternates for the national event after finishing at 71.
Dalton's Paul Briggs finished out of th emoney at 12-over.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship will be held Sept. 22-27 at the Charlotte Country Club and Carolina Golf Club.
