CARY, N.C. -- Lanesborough resident Derek Paris turned in some big defensive plays Saturday in a pair of games at the USA Baseball National 14-and-under tryouts.

In Saturday's first game, a 7-6 loss to North Texas for Paris and Team New England, he threw out a runner attempting to steal second. Then, the catcher by trade moved to third base, where he speared a line drive and recorded a pair of outs by doubling a runner off third.

New England dropped a 13-4 decision to South Florida in its second game on Saturday. Paris recorded three putouts at third base and, behind the dish, took a throw from center field and tagged out a runner attempting to score.

At the plate, Paris went 1-for-1 with a walk against South Florida. He stole two bases and scored a run.

Paris will be a freshman at Mount Greylock this fall.
