WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Williams College women's tennis team wrapped up Day 3 of the Lindsay Morehouse Invitational, named for Eph and former women’s tennis captain Lindsay Morehouse, who was killed in the terrorist attack in New York City on Sept. 11.

 

Williams played four doubles matches against Skidmore and three singles matches against Middlebury, winning all seven. The tournament has no winner, as it is played in a round-robin style with no elimination, allowing for players to have more time on the court.

 

“First tournament [is] under our belts,”  head coach Anik Cepeda sai. “Competition gives us feedback on where we’re at and where we need to go. We’re looking forward to two more weeks of work."

 

Korina Neveux and Chloe Henderson swept Skidmore’s Sofia Carlsson and Arielle Gal, 6-0, in their first match of the day. Maxine Ng and  Emily Zheng also defeated Skidmore, 6-2, in their first match. In the second round of doubles, the Ephs switched partners, with Neveux and Zheng facing down Skidmore, 6-3. Ng and Henderson played a grueling tiebreaker set, eventually winning out, 7-3. 

 

In singles, Williams came away three for three, with Neveux, Henderson, and Ng each foiling their Middlebury opponents. Overall, the Ephs won 17 of their 21 matches against Skidmore and Middlebury over the weekend. 

 

One senior from each attending school was presented with the Lindsay Morehouse Award, given to a senior player who possesses sportsmanship, friendliness, and character, among other qualities. The players awarded were Skidmore’s Laura Swenson, Middlebury’s Christina Puccinelli, and William’s Leah Bush, who is also captain of tennis team. “Leah is a leader in giving 100 percent of what she has to offer,” Cepeda said. “I’m excited for her year.”

 

The Ephs will play next at the ITA from Sept. 28-30. The annual match against Amherst will take place on Oct. 6 at Amherst College.

 

Women's Soccer

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Victoria Laino scored in the 52nd minute Sunday to lead Williams to a 1-0 win over Springfield College.

 

Olivia Barnhill made two saves to earn the win in goal.

 

Williams (5-0) goes to Amherst on Saturday.

 

Men's Soccer

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Demian Gass scored in the 90th minute Sunday to lift Williams to a 2-1 win over Babson.

 

Sean Dory had tied it for the Ephs with a goal midway through the first half.

 

Aaron Schein stopped three shots to earn the win in goal.

 

Williams (2-0-1) goes ot Amherst on Saturday. 

 

Women's Golf

HANOVER, N.H. -- Cordelia Chan carded a 1-over-par round of 73 on Sunday to lead Williams to a 10th-place finish at the Dartmouth Invitational.

 

As a team, Williams finishe at 41-over for the two-day tournament, competing against 14 Division I teams.

 

The University at Albany won the event with a collective 4-over.

 

Men's Golf

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Williams' Sam Goldenring finished at 4-under at the two-day Duke Nelson Invitational, taking medalist honors and leading the Ephs to a four-stroke win over runner-up Trinity College.
