SALEM, Mass. -- The Williams College Ephs (5-4) defeated the Salem State Vikings (1-11) by a score of 78-61 in their final game of 2019 behind 18 points from Spencer Spivy and Matt Karpowicz.

Spivy opened the game with a 3-pointer, then finished a layup off of a steal for his fifth point in the first 30 seconds. Salem St. called a timeout 2:43 into the game with Williams up 13-2.

After the Ephs took a 23-3 lead 5:51 into the contest, the Vikings closed the deficit to 10, led by six points from Hakeem Animashaun.

The Vikings came as close as eight points with 7:17 to go in the half, but back to back treys off the hands of Cole Prowitt-Smith and Alex Stoddard secured another double-digit lead for Williams at 38-24.

The Ephs went into the break with a 45-28 lead behind 15 points from Spivy and 14 points from Karpowicz on perfect 7-for-7 shooting. Prowitt-Smith dished out four assists. Jaden Castillo had eight points for Salem St.

Evan Mason started off hot in the second half for the Vikings, scoring seven points in the first two minutes of play and cutting the Eph advantage to seven, 45-38. Stoddard replied with five straight points, and the Vikings took a timeout with Ephs up 50-38 and 16:52 remaining.

The game stayed level for the next several minutes, with Henry Feinberg hitting a three with 11:03 left to put the Ephs ahead by 13. Williams played steady the rest of the way, with all five starters finishing with over 10 points. Karpowicz and Spivy each had 18, while Feinberg added 14. Stoddard and Prowitt-Smith had 11 and 10, respectively.

The Vikings outrebounded the Ephs, 45-40, but committed 10 more turnovers. Animashaun led all scorers with 24 points, as Castillo and Mason had 13 a piece.

"It felt great to close out the year and this tournament with a win," Williams coach Kevin App said. "We've been getting better and competing, so to close one out on the road against a team that's always competitive was great to see.

"We faced injuries and sickness in this first semester, and the seniors have been great and setting the tone, especially in practice. They've taught the young guys how to be good, and it starts with their attitude, effort, and focus in practice."

Williams travels to New York on Saturday to play Union College at 3 p.m.

"We're looking forward to getting back to campus and getting better, and really learning from these first nine games. I think we played some of our best offensive basketball this tournament, so it's really about building out collective confidence on the defensive end, no matter the situation or the game," App said.

"We're happy to head into 2020 with a win, and look forward to keep rolling as a group."
