Williamstown Select Board Finalizes Charge for Town's Diversity Committee

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board Monday concluded an effort that dates back to early summer when it unanimously approved a revised charge for the town's diversity committee.   Chairman Hugh Daley drove the effort to revise the document that outlines the purpose of the Diversity, Inclusion, Race and Equity Advisory Committee.   Although the Select Board had the authority to unilaterally change the charter for a body it created in the summer of 2020, the board engaged in a dialogue with its colleagues currently serving on the DIRE Committee to find language that made sense to all parties.   Right up until the final moments before Monday's vote, the board

Images Cinema Fundraiser: Music in Movies

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Images Cinema presents a fundraising event, Music in Movies: Roomful of Teeth, Carter Burwell, and "Catherine Called Birdy," on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7:30pm.    Oscar nominated composer Carter Burwell and Roomful of Teeth founder Brad Wells will discuss their collaboration on the "Catherine Called Birdy" score following a screening of the film.    The film is directed by Lena Dunham and stars Bella Ramsey, Billie Piper, Andrew Scott, and Joe Alwyn. Samantha Kaftan Joins SVMC ExpressCare

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) welcomes Physician Assistant Samantha Kaftan, PA-C, to SVMC ExpressCare and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Physicians.    Kaftan earned her master's degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She received a bachelor's in biology from the University of Dallas in Texas. Williamstown Rural Lands Gets Rights on Oblong Road Property

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to assign the town's right of first refusal on a 10-acre parcel in South Williamstown.   The vote, which is contingent on ironing out an 11th-hour "wrinkle," closed a conversation that began  in July over a parcel currently farmed by Sweet Brook Farm.   The board decided, 4-1, to assign the town's right to Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation, which hopes to purchase the Oblong Road property for the same $745,000 price that owner Beth Phelps is offered by a developer who wants to acquire the site for residential development.   The land has been conserved under the commonwealth's Chapter

Williams Men's Basketball Tops RPI

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Declan Porter scored 13 points Tuesday to lead the Williams College men's basketball team to a 58-40 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic.   Cole Prowitt-Smith finished with eight points and 10 rebounds for Williams (6-0), which hosts Wesleyan on Saturday.   Women's Basketball SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Julia Blanck scored 19 points to lead Skidmore to a 70-56 win over Williams.   Arianna Gerig scored 16 to lead Williams (4-2), which hosts Keene State on Friday.

North County Communities Close to Hiring Shared HR Director

ADAMS, Mass. — The town is close to picking a candidate for a grant-funded human resources director, which will split time between Adams, North Adams and Williamstown. 

 

The Board of Selectmen's Personnel Sub-committee met on Monday to discuss the position and several other personnel matters. In March, the three communities received a $100,000 grant from the state's Community Compact Cabinet Efficiency and Regionalization program to fund the position.

Williamstown Fire District Outlines Green Elements of Proposed Station

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Fire District officials hope that residents in February will allow the district to build a new station that meets firefighters' needs and meets the town's goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.   Earlier this month, the Williamstown Fire District held a public forum to discuss the ways that its building project aligns with the ambitious target that town meeting approved in 2021.   Chris Schaffer of sustainable design firm The Green Engineer of Concord and Chris Wante of Pittsfield architect EDM outlined some of the features that planners are incorporating in the design process in a presentation at the Williamstown Youth
