Williamstown Grappling With 'Fairness' of Property Tax Proposal

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A property tax proposal that has dominated Select Board discussions this summer largely comes down to a question of how one defines "fairness."   Select Board member Stephanie Boyd has been advocating that the town consider adopting the commonwealth's residential tax exemption as a way to shift some of the tax levy away from owners of lower-priced homes and toward owners of higher-end properties.   She talked about the RTE in her campaign for the board in the spring, and she has argued in recent meetings that the exemption is one small step the town can make to require those who have a little more to pay a little more to support town

James Kalmuk Joins Dartmouth Cancer Center

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Dr. James Kalmuk, medical oncologist, has joined the Dartmouth Cancer Center at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC).   Kalmuk holds a masters in interdisciplinary science from Roswell Park Cancer Institute and attended medical school at SUNY Update Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Swastika Etched into Williamstown Bus Shelter

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Police are investigating an incident of vandalism that left a swastika on the side of a Main Street structure.   On Tuesday at 6 p.m., police received a call reporting a swastika on the Berkshire Regional Transportation Authority bus shelter on Main Street (Route 2) across from Hopkins Hall on the Williams College campus.   Officer John McConnell responded to the scene and reported that the symbol was etched into the plastic on the inside of the shelter's front panel.   McConnell told a BRTA bus driver, who reported the incident to their supervisor, according to the police report.   The BRTA said it was notified by Williamstown Police on

Williamstown Road Closures to Accommodate Route 7 Repairs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — In order to complete the road repairs on Route 7 in the Bulkley St and Jamieson Heights area, that section of road will be closed for a portion of Friday Sept. 8.   Closures are estimated to start at 7 am and are expected to last until 3:30 pm.    Closures for through traffic will be placed at Sand Springs Road at Simonds Rd, and North Street at Field Park, with local traffic able to access in the following ways:   Jamieson Heights can be reached by way of Simonds Road, while North Street will allow access up to Bulkley Street. Between those two streets, traffic will not be able to pass during the closure.

Ribbon Cut on Williamstown's Mohican Trail

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — At the ribbon cutting for the new Mohican Trail on Thursday morning, the president of the Berkshire Bike Path Council remembered a time when not everyone believed such paths could be built.   "Twenty-three years ago, a small chorus of people started singing 'Bike path, bike path, bike path,' and everybody thought we were nuts … including Mayor Barrett," Margie Cohen said, nodding to now state Rep. John Barrett III, one of several state and local dignitaries on hand for the ceremony.   "Twenty-three years later, the Berkshire Bike Path Council has over 400 members singing, loudly, 'Bike path, bike path, bike path.'

Williamstown Water Main Break Closes Route 7 to Through Traffic

  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A burst water main on North Street near Jamieson Heights on Wednesday left an undetermined number of residences without water and forced a closure of Route 7 to through traffic.   At about 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon, the Police Department posted on its Facebook page that Route 7 (North Street and Simonds Road) was closed to through traffic from the Field Park rotary north to Sand Springs Road.   Town Manager Bob Menicocci said the break was impacting a localized area near the rupture.   “It looks to be a pretty bad break, so it may take some time to repair the damage and restore service to those impacted,” Menicocci said in

Behavioral Health Network Receives State Grant

BOSTON — Behavioral Health Network, Inc., which services communities in Berkshire County, received a $772,706 grant to support mental health among young children.   The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced that they are awarding $4.1 million in Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Grants to organizations that support the social-emotional development and behavioral health of children in early education and care programs across Massachusetts.   This funding will go to six organizations that serve early education programs by training providers and improving program processes to promote the developmental, social-emotional, and behavioral well-being of infants and young
