By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Jeffrey Johnson announced Monday that he will be stepping down from his seat on the Select Board.   Johnson, citing health issues, told his colleagues at the end of the meeting that the decision to resign was necessary but mentioned that it made him angry.   "The biggest people should know is I'm doing OK," the second-term Select Board member said. "But this is what I have to do. I've never quit anything. … I almost just swore for the first time in public because of how I feel about it."   Johnson was elected to the five-member panel in 2021 after serving as an original member of what then was known as the

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
12:49PM / Monday, August 11, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The newly renamed READI Committee last week began discussing whether it should continue to operate as an advisory committee to the Select Board.   In July, the Select Board looked at the diversity panel's recommendation for an updated charge for the body, which is going into its sixth year of operation.   Among the recommendations the elected body accepted was a new name for the advisory committee, which, going forward, will be known as the Race, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.   The Select Board at its July 28 meeting stopped short of adopting the full updated charge pitched by the members of READI. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — When the Clark Art Institute opened its expanded campus more than a decade ago, the Tadao Ando-designed Clark Center won acclaim throughout the worlds of art and architecture.

However, according to a retired Williams College professor, at least one glowing review may have understated the beauty of the project.

"You approach the new Clark Center along smooth walls of red granite that can feel a bit daunting. But a reward is imminent," New York Times art critic Roberta Smith wrote in July 2014, going on to discuss everything on the other side of that wall.

Bud Wobus offers a different perspective: The red granite walls outside are part of the

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:49AM / Friday, August 08, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After a second straight year of hefty increases in the cost of health insurance under the Berkshire Health Group umbrella, the Williamstown Finance Committee is discussing the need for cost containment for the joint insurance purchase group.   "At this point, we could be looking at another substantial increase for next year," Fin Comm member Melissa Cragg said at the panel's July 25 meeting. "Really, I think we're at the point where benefit design has to be the issue on the table.   "Two-thirds of our [employee] base is unionized, so there's no reopening the contracts, probably, over this. But it's time for us to
