Williamstown Fire District Panel OKs 10% Station Cost Cut
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:03AM / Thursday, January 26, 2023
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The committee that oversees the Fire District on Wednesday agreed to lower by 10 percent its request to voters to fund a new station on Main Street.   Prudential Committee Chair David Moresi asked his colleagues to hold off on a planned review of the warrant for the Feb. 28 special district meeting to seek borrowing authority to fund the building project.   Instead, Moresi, who also serves on the district's Building Committee, told the three other members of the Prudential Committee in attendance that he would call a special meeting of the panel to approve new warrant article language requesting authority to spend up to $22.5 million on the new

Letter: New Fire Station
Letter to the Editor,
02:20PM / Wednesday, January 25, 2023

To the Editor:

I support our Fire Department as well as our Police Department. The proposal to spend $25 million is not unreasonable for what is being proposed.

However, the primary reason we need a new fire station is the requirement to have big fire trunks with long ladders to protect Williams College's tall buildings for which the college pays no taxes. While Williams has it's own security police department it does not have its own fire department.

It is true that they support Fire Department volunteers, which is good. Thus, the college should contribute $10 million up front toward the new fire station and voters should be asked to vote to approve $15 million toward a new fire

Letter: Delay Vote on New Williamstown Fire Station
Letter to the Editor,
01:50PM / Wednesday, January 25, 2023

To the Editor,

There is no question that the Williamstown Fire District needs a new modern facility to replace its antiquated 73-year-old Water Street station. While a new fire station is long overdue, the proposed $25 million building is challenging to justify.

In response to concerns about the size and cost of the project, the district recently released a "Comparison of Size of Proposed Williamstown Fire Station to Other Fire Stations" study on its official website and Facebook page. However, the comparison study overlooks several details and, when thoroughly examined, provides the best evidence why the Feb. 28 vote should be postponed so a re-evaluation can occur, and a new

Williamstown Planning Board Talks 'Cottage Court' Bylaw
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:17PM / Tuesday, January 24, 2023
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Though its work is not completed for the proposals it hopes to bring to this spring's annual town meeting, the Planning Board recently started talking about an idea it wants to work on for the 2023-24 cycle.   Ken Kuttner and Roger Lawrence at the board's January meeting gave their colleagues a presentation on the concept of cottage courts and suggested a bylaw could be crafted to allow that style of housing in town.   Cottage courts are relatively small clusters of homes, typically 500 to 800 square feet, grouped together on a single residential lot.   "They're not 'tiny houses,' " Kuttner said. "Typically,

Williamstown Fire Station Committee Defends Size, Cost of Project
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:01AM / Monday, January 23, 2023
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Two members of the Select Board on Wednesday urged the Fire District's Building Committee to use the next month to find cost savings in an estimated $25 million building project.   Committee members responded by repeating that the district is committed to delivering the town the fire station it needs for the lowest possible cost and said the "value engineering" process would continue even after a planned Feb. 28 bond authorization vote if residents approve the project.   But the Building Committee also presented data that shows the project it is planning is in line with comparable fire stations from several dozen facilities recently built
