By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:15AM / Tuesday, October 28, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The town's Agricultural Commission is considering ways to expand its reach to protect farming in a town that once boasted 138 working farms.   That number comes from the Williamstown Historical Museum, which was cited in a 2020 study by environmental planning students at Williams College.   As of 2020, that number was down to 16 active farms and stables, and, statewide, Massachusetts saw 113,000 acres of farmland lost between 1997 and 2022, Ag Commission Chair Sarah Gardner told the Select Board last week.   To stem that tide, the commonwealth created the Farmland Action Plan and passed legislation that allows municipal ag commissions to

It is also a study in the evasiveness of genre. Although the morals are skewed, the bullets plentiful, and the femmes most definitely fatale, Bogart's Marlowe is a decent, (mostly) unconflicted hero,

Letter: Vote Markey for Senate
Letter to the Editor,
04:05PM / Thursday, October 23, 2025

To the Editor:

Recently, we learned that frequent Berkshire visitor, U.S. Senator Ed Markey, has another Democratic challenger. Last time it was Rep. Joe Kennedy. This time it's Rep. Seth Moulton. [Alex Rikleen of Acton, a former teacher, is also running.]

I'm not against primaries, but as WBUR in Boston said: "Moulton is running on age, but what else?" Joe Kennedy had the same platform — and Massachusetts voters rejected him.

It seems to me a candidate's age is irrelevant if he's doing the job, and Ed Markey is doing his job. Very well, in fact. As I said, he's no stranger to the Berkshires, and he's fighting Trump's fascist policies in

Williamstown Planning Board Refining Campus Overlay Proposal
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:44AM / Thursday, October 23, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Planning Board last week discussed bringing a campus overlay proposal to town meeting as soon as this May.   One member of the board and the town planner have been consulting with officials at Williams College on a potential fix to a long-term issue: The bulk of the college's campus is in the General Residence zoning district, where the kinds of buildings the school needs do not fit the regulatory regime.   Much of campus was built out before the advent of zoning, and those structures are protected by the rules around pre-existing non-conformity. But a lot of the school's infrastructure has been built since the town instituted zoning under a

If you are going door-to-door, remember to dress appropriately, carry a flashlight and only visit homes with lights on in your neighborhood.

Below is a list of towns holding trick-or-treat hours on Halloween, unless otherwise noted. Those towns that are crossed out are dates from last year that have not been updated. The towns with the asterisks are the same times every year.

If you don't see your town listed and you know the hours, let us know

Williamstown Select Board Opts Not to Fill Vacant Seat
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:56AM / Wednesday, October 22, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided not to fill seven months remaining on a vacant seat and instead allow town voters to fill out the board in May's annual town election.   For the second time in a year, the five-person board finds itself down a member. This time, it is due to the resignation of Jeffrey Johnson, who stepped down this fall because of health issues.   Johnson earned his second three-year term on the board in the May 2024 town election, meaning that the remaining two years of his seat will be on the ballot this spring, along with the seats currently held by Stephanie Boyd and Shana Dixon, who was elected last May to fill the final year

Letter: No 'No King Day' in Williamstown
Letter to the Editor,
11:20AM / Monday, October 20, 2025

To the Editor:

Apparently, there was no scheduled "No Kings Day" rally in Williamstown, the home of Williams College.

So ..... I took my sign and my trusty chair and sat on the lawn outside the Williamstown traffic oval just before the library's entrance.

My sign was small, but it slowed most of the speeding traffic. Got a couple of honks. I also put my signs in my Jeep's windows in the library's parking lot.

I sat there for about two hours. One elderly couple stopped looking for the rally that had been held at Field Park inside the oval at the previous No Kings rally. Alas, there was only me and my sign. A couple riding on a tandem bike holding a No Kings sign
