Clark Art, Tanglewood Host Pulitzer Prize-Winning Art Critic

Williamstown's Median Home Tax Bill Expected to Rise by 6 Percent

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The median-valued home in town can expect to see a 6.3 percent property tax increase in fiscal year 2026.   That is one of the takeaways from a presentation the Select Board will hear on Monday evening from Principal Assessor Chris Lamarre.   Lamarre will be in front of the board for its annual tax classification hearing.   Each year, the board faces a number of decision points about how to distribute the tax levy in the town of 7,600.   Historically, the Select Board has gone along with staff recommendations to not adopt a number of provisions in Massachusetts General Law, including the split tax rate, which would charge commercial property

Williamstown Fin Comm Discusses Soaring Health Insurance Cost

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After a second straight year of hefty increases in the cost of health insurance under the Berkshire Health Group umbrella, the Williamstown Finance Committee is discussing the need for cost containment for the joint insurance purchase group.   "At this point, we could be looking at another substantial increase for next year," Fin Comm member Melissa Cragg said at the panel's July 25 meeting. "Really, I think we're at the point where benefit design has to be the issue on the table.   "Two-thirds of our [employee] base is unionized, so there's no reopening the contracts, probably, over this. PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Westside Legends will host its fourth annual Westside Sweet G Super Soap Box Derby on Saturday, Aug. 9, from noon to 4 p.m. with a rain date of Aug. 10.    Check-in for racers starts at 11 a.m. at the corner of Columbus and Robbins Ave.   The event features a day of activities for the whole family.   There will be three race classes: kids from 6-12, kids from 13-17, and an adult class, ages 18 and older. Berkshire County Public Housing Benefits From Internet Access Grants

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Healey-Driscoll administration and Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's (MassTech) Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) awarded $31,548,018 to four internet service providers (ISPs) to increase internet access for affordable and public housing residents statewide.    Aervivo Inc. was awarded $10,527,014 for 6,402 housing units. This uncludes 30 units in Pittsfield through the Beacon Residential Management Limited Partnership and 30 units in Williamstown through the Williamstown Housing Authority.   Archtop Fiber LLC was awarded $481,955 for 164 housing units. Williamstown Calls Another Special Fire District Meeting, Truck Replacement on Agenda

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — For the second time in two months, the Prudential Committee has called a special meeting of the Fire District.   This time, it will be cleaning up a decision it made at the July 1 special meeting and reversing one district voters made in May 2024.   At a special meeting of the Prudential Committee on Wednesday, the panel voted to set a special meeting for Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Water Street station.   Article 1 on the two-item warrant will ask meeting members to transfer $415,698 from free cash to put toward interest on bond anticipation notes related to the new Main Street station project.   That is a payment the district thought

ARLINGTON, Vt. — Orion's had a hard live and he's been patiently waiting a very long time for his forever home.   iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home.   Orion is a 7- to 8-year-old pit bull mix who has been at Second Chance Animal Shelter since 2021.   Shelter Manager Troy Quinn said Orion came to them from animal control after experiencing neglect.   "He was found by animal control on a property, tied to a tree, no shelter, no food or water. Williams Student Seeking Community Service in Vandalism Incident

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A Williams College student charged in a commencement day vandalism incident is asking Northern Berkshire District Court to agree to a community service plan.   Liam Carey, 20, of Virginia, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Aug. 11, to answer to charges of vandalism, destruction of property less than $1,200, resisting arrest and trespass arising from the June 8 incident.   Williamstown Police responded to the scene near the commencement grounds at about 7 a.m. to find that Carey had removed the American flag from a college-owned flag pole and replaced it with a Palestine flag.   College officials told police that Carey had smashed a
