WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Planning Board last week gave Williams College the first approval it needs to build a 55,000-square foot indoor athletic facility on the north side of its campus. Over the strenuous objection of a Southworth Street resident, the board found that the college's plan for a "multipurpose recreation center" or MRC off Stetson Road has adequate on-site parking to accommodate its use as an indoor practice facility to replace Towne Field House, which has been out of commission since last spring and was demolished this winter. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock Regional School Committee on Thursday voted unanimously to slightly increase the assessment to the district's member towns from the figures in the draft budget presented by the administration. The School Committee opted to lower the use of Mount Greylock's reserve account by $70,000 and, instead, increase by that amount the share of the fiscal year 2025 operating budget shared proportionally by Lanesborough and Williamstown taxpayers.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Library officials plan to spend the next few years to develop a long-term solution for a building that has been a topic of discussion in town for more than a decade. The chair of the Milne Library Board of Trustees told the town's Finance Committee last week that $300,000 allocated last year for repairs to the Main Street facility are meant to keep the building operational while a board and town decide how to get a building that will last for decades to come. Several writers before me have enumerated many well-reasoned arguments against involvement of our local governance in such a controversial issue. I come at the question from a somewhat different angle. I have asked the Select Board on numerous occasions to cite the source(s) from which they have authority to comment as a board on articles not strictly related to Williamstown issues.
