Out of 10 No. 1 seeds in the MIAA basketball tournaments this winter – five boys, five girls – nine are still playing.   Those nine did not have to play the Lee High girls basketball team.   The ninth-seeded Wildcats pulled off arguably the season’s biggest upset on Saturday when they upended No. 1 Hopedale to reach this week’s state semi-final round.   On Sunday afternoon, the Lee girls got together to celebrate their Final Four berth in style, cutting down one of the nets in their gymnasium and boarding a flatbed for a parade down Main Street.   Senior captain Mia Puleri said that Lee, which trailed by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter on

01:35PM / Thursday, March 06, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Four potential candidates have taken out nomination papers for three seats on the Select Board that will be voted on this May, the town clerk reported on Wednesday.   Peter Beck, whose five-year term on the Planning Board is expiring, has taken out papers for a three-year seat on the Select Board, as has Matthew Neely, who was appointed last fall to fill a seat vacated by Andrew Hogeland.   In most years, the five-person Select Board has at most two seats on the May ballot, but Hogeland's resignation created a scenario where more than half the board will be up for grabs in May.   The three-year terms of incumbents Randal Fippinger and Jane

Divided Williamstown Select Board Implements Senior Tax Exemption
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
06:25PM / Tuesday, March 04, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday voted, 3-1, to implement a means-tested senior property tax exemption that town meeting approved last May.   The annual town meeting overwhelmingly supported the home rule petition, which was waiting on approval from the legislature and the signature of the governor before the local property tax relief plan could be put into action. The town learned in January that it had the go-ahead.   But one member of the Select Board argued that the panel should hit pause on the plan because of unintended consequences that actually could hurt the seniors it is meant to benefit and because the implementation could result in the town

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:10AM / Tuesday, March 04, 2025
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock Regional School Committee Thursday agreed to move ahead with the draft budget largely intact from the version the panel reviewed at its Feb. 13 meeting.   If moved forward by the full committee after its March 13 public hearing and, ultimately, approved by voters in each member town, the fiscal year 2026 spending plan would continue a recent trend of spending down the district's reserves and still translate to assessment increases of nearly 8 percent for Williamstown and 7 percent for Lanesborough from the fiscal year that ends on June 30.   "Between now and March 13, there will be areas where we're refining utilities and
