Hoosac Water Quality District Facing Prospect of Losing Compost Operation

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — North Adams and Williamstown could be facing considerably higher sewer fees in the near future if the commonwealth ends a 40-year-old composting program.   Hoosac Water Quality District Chief Operator Brad Furlon broke the news to the Williamtown Finance Committee in his presentation of the district's fiscal year 2024 spending plan.   "There's always been revenues for septage fees and compost fees," Furlon said on Wednesday. Red Shirt Farm Expanding With Store/Commercial Kitchen Build

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Red Shirt Farm will debut a farm store and community commercial kitchen on Route 7 to offer local food choices and opportunities for learning.

The farm recently broke ground on the project and plans to have a soft opening in December.

On Friday, state and local officials gathered at the 10-acre farm for a site visit organized by 1Berkshire. 

Owner Jim Schultz detailed Red Shirt's organic, regenerative farming practices, low carbon footprint operations, and dedication to food access that led to building a store.

Four Running for Two Seats on Williamstown Select Board

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Four candidates have returned papers for two Select Board seats that will will be filled at May's annual town election.   Incumbent Andrew Hogeland and newcomers Stephanie Boyd, Andrea Bryant and Paul Harsch each completed papers with the required number of signatures before Tuesday's deadline.   The town clerk and board of registrars now have to certify the signatures on the nomination papers. Williamstown Police Seeking 9 Percent Budget Hike

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A return to pre-pandemic level staffing and an adjustment to the commonwealth's police reforms have the Police Department seeking a 9 percent increase in funding in the fiscal year 2024 budget.   Police Chief Mike Ziemba last week presented his budget to the Finance Committee alongside Town Accountant Anna Osborn and Town Manager Robert Menicicoci.   Fin Comm Chair Melissa Cragg noted that the WPD spending plan is an outlier compared with other town budget centers, which are seeking more modest 3 to 5 percent increases in the budget that will go to the annual town meeting in May.
