WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — With a boost from her dad, Mia Wax on Wednesday turned on the first candle of the more than 12-foot tall menorah at the Williams Inn. Around 40 people attended the community lighting for the first night of Hanukkah, which fell this year on the same day as Christmas. They gathered in the snow around the glowing blue electric menorah even as the temperature hovered around 12 degrees. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The board of the town's Affordable Housing Trust hopes to resolve in January an issue with the non-profit looking to build four single-family homes on a Summer Street parcel owned by the trust. At their Dec. 17 meeting, the trustees revisited the question of how Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanities will market the homes, which will be built over a period of four years if the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity wins approval from the town. The final regulatory hurdle for Habitat is Development Plan Review for the proposed subdivision by the Planning Board, which is scheduled to address the issue in a public hearing at its Jan. 14 4 Comments

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- State Police detectives continue to investigate a Sunday morning shooting on Cole Avenue, and the Williamstown Police plans a community meeting to discuss procedures when the investigation ends. On Tuesday morning, WPD Chief Michael Ziemba sent a news release to update the committee that while police believe there is no threat to the general public, the probe continues into a shooting at 330 Cole Ave. that sent one individual to the hospital. Ziemba's news release did not indicate that any arrests have been made in the case. He did provide a little more detail about the aftermath of the shooting. The new Williams College of Museum of Art is being designed to harmonize with the natural setting. Several long-discussed building projects in town broke ground in 2024. Perhaps no public project has generated as much discussion over the last decade as the proposed new fire station. In September, the long-planned project finally began to come to fruition. By the end of the calendar year, the foundation was laid and part of the structure was starting to take shape. Officials in the Williamstown Fire District hope to have the $22.5 million project ready for occupancy so the department can move out of the cramped and outdated station on Water Street.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — One person was shot with a firearm at 330 Cole Ave. on Sunday morning, triggering an hour-long lockdown of Williams College and a manhunt for an armed suspect. A reverse 911 call from the town at 12:39 Sunday afternoon indicated that Williamstown Police and the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the incident. "At this time, based on evidence seen, this appears to be a specific, targeted incident," the reverse 911 call indicated. "The general public not in danger at this time. Christmas falls on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, and New Year's Day on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.
Christmas is now a state holiday but it wasn't always. The General Court under the control of the Puritans outlawed the holiday in 1659.

 WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Two-thirds of the town-owned sidewalks got good grades in a recent analysis ordered by the Planning Board. But, overall, the results were more mixed, with many of the town's less affluent neighborhoods being home to some of its more deficient sidewalks or going without sidewalks at all. BOSTON — The state awarded farms in West Stockbridge and Lee grants to address composting and climate smart agriculture. The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $3.6 million in more than 100 grant awards through several programs, including the Agricultural Food Safety Improvement Program (AFSIP), the Agricultural Composting Improvement Program (ACIP), the Cranberry Bog Renovation (CBRG) Program, and the Climate Smart Agriculture Program (CSAP). WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — By a 5-1 vote, the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee on Thursday OK'd a school-sanctioned field trip to Ecuador despite concerns that not all district families would be able to afford the opportunity. Keith Jones, a social worker at the middle-high school, proposed the trip for the first week of July in 2026, during summer vacation. The newest batch of puppets that have joined the school. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Puppets named Melody and Simu gave a lesson on friendship to Lanesborough Elementary School students last week.
Classes were called to the music room throughout the day on Thursday to learn about the trials and tribulations of making friends, how friends work through disagreements, setting healthy boundaries, and more.
While the teachers were inanimate, the topics they covered were very real.
Sponsored by Bedard Brothers Chevrolet, the shows were presented by the Vermont Family Network's Puppets in Education. The school also received five puppets of its own to continue
