Crust Pizza Obtains Alcohol License for Williamstown Location

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday OK'd an alcohol license for the new Crust Pizza location at 46 Spring Street, in space recently occupied by the Red Herring.   Crust owner Jim Cervone told the board that he hoped to open a second location for the PIttsfield pizza shop in late August or early September.   Cervone said the business's practice is to get Training for Intervention Procedures or TIPs training for all employees 18 and older and that policy is to have at least one TIPs-certified team member on the premises at all times.   That said, Cervone said alcohol sales are not a focus of his restaurant.   "Crust is not the kind of place

Striking Out Cancer Event Moved to July 1

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- After Saturday's rain forced a postponement, the Striking Out in the Berkshires Jimmy Fund fund-raiser will try again on Saturday, July 1 at Clapp Park.   Players of any ability are welcome to participate in a charity baseball and softball games.   So are players with no ability at all.   "I've had some people call and text me and ask, 'Do you have to be a baseball player?' Williamstown Housing Trust Awards First-Time Homeowner Grant

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The trustees of the town's Affordable Housing Trust on Wednesday approved a grant under its DeMayo Mortgage Assistance Program for the first time in more than a year.   On a vote of 5-0, the trustees OK'd a $15,000 award to a longtime resident of Pownal, Vt., looking to become a first-time homeowner in Williamstown.   A representative of lender Greylock Federal Credit Union told the trustees that the would-be homeowner would have needed help from family to make the purchase happen, but for the grant from the town.   "He is looking to retire soon and wants to put down roots in Williamstown," Catherine Squires told the board.

Williamstown Con Comm OKs Water Street Development

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Conservation Commission on Thursday set conditions for what is now planned for a 16-unit residential development on the site of the former Grange Hall on Water Street.   Engineer Charlie LaBatt of Guntlow and Associates appeared before the Con Comm to explain the erosion and stormwater management plan for the project, which has been scaled back considerably from when it first was discussed at Town Hall about a year ago.   At one point, developers Hicks Stone and Bill Freeman talked about placing as many as 28 units on the 6.6-acre site, a concept that would have included four apartments in the existing Grange Hall.   "Further evaluation of

With warmer temperatures and high humidity this weekend, expect some thunderstorms.

Thursday, June 22 should be mostly pleasant with a high of 77. Sunshine will give way to clouds and some possible showers this afternoon, according to Accuweather.

Expect similar temperatures Friday but with more clouds. A light shower can be expected in the afternoon. Showers will continue on and off throughout the night. There is a chance scattered thunderstorms.

Williamstown Fire Building Committee Looks to Press National Grid on Interconnection Issue

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Fire District's Building Committee discussed on Wednesday how it could put pressure on National Grid to upgrade the town's infrastructure to accommodate plans for a new net-zero fire station and other potential solar projects in town.   At issue is the district's application for interconnection with the utility's electrical service line.   The plan is to build a connection that will allow the district to both draw electricity from the grid and feed power to it from the solar arrays planned at the Main Street station.   At Wednesday's Building Committee meeting, the district's project coordinator told the body that

Williamstown Charter Review Committee Discusses Australian Ballot

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee last week discussed whether the town should consider creating a mechanism for ballot votes to approve questions normally decided by town meeting.   Chair Andrew Hogeland told his colleagues at their June 15 meeting that any such move would be unique in the commonwealth, but he cited a couple of precedents where other communities have taken steps in that direction.   "The [Massachusetts Municipal Association] lawyer had two examples," Hogeland said. LENOX, Mass. -- Three Berkshire County Youth Soccer League teams have qualified for the Massachusettts Tournament of Champions this weekend in Lancaster.   Two girls teams and one boys team are advancing to the state tourney based on their performance throughout the spring: the 7th- and 8th-grade Lenox Gold girls, the 5th- and 6th-grade North Adams Breakers girls and the 5th- and 6th-grade Williamstown Vipers boys.   The BCYSL held its season-ending tournament on Saturday at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School, with championships decided in seven different groups.   Winners included:   Boys 5/6 B-Cup - Williamstown 1, Lenox 1 (Williamstown wins on penalty kicks).
