Volunteer Activities in North Adams & Pittsfield for MLK Jr. Day

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Both Berkshire County's cities will recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday with service-oriented activities.    The Northern Berkshire Day of Service will be will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Venable Hall gym on the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts campus. Sponsored by the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition, volunteer activities will run from 9 to noon followed by a celebratory lunch at 12:30 in Venable gym.   In Pittsfield, the day will start off with a breakfast and keynote speech by Charles Redd, Berkshire Health System's diversity, equity and inclusion officer and a BCC alum, from 8 to 9 at First United Methodist

Letter: Williamstown Youth Center

To the Editor:

The Williamstown Youth Center has received money from the town of Williamstown every year since 2014. In 2014, they requested $70,000, and incrementally, their requests have increased to $77,000.

That financial support has become nearly automatic through the years. Are the town's taxes subsidizing those families who genuinely need financial assistance, or are the taxes sponsoring every family at the WYC? The WYC should become self-sustaining; otherwise, it will continually request funds from the taxpayers and other local organizations in perpetuity.

The Williamstown Community Chest provides an additional $55,000 a year to the WYC. In the future, that share of money

MCLA to Offer National Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinics

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. –- The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Athletic Department will host two events on Feb. 4 to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day – an initiative that dates back to 1987 to encourage the participation of girls and women in sports. Clinic registration is open until Jan. 29.     The day will include a pickleball clinic and tournament for women from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Amsler Campus Center gymnasium and a sports clinic for girls in grades 3-8 from 12 to 4 at the gym.   The sports clinic for girls will offer instruction in softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse and volleyball.   Advanced registration and payment

Williamstown DIRE Committee Meets Co-Author of 2020's Article 37

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — One of the co-authors of an equity resolution passed by town meeting in 2020 met last week with the Diversity, Inclusion and Racial Equity Committee to talk about the resolution's implementation in its first two years.   Huff Templeton drafted Article 37 on the 2020 annual town meeting warrant along with then-Mount Greylock Regional School students Tashi and Krishin Rai.   The DIRE Committee invited Templeton to sit down with the panel to talk about the article and, specifically, the quarterly reports it requires of all town "boards, committees, and agencies."   Article 37, drafted and passed at around the time the DIRE Committee

Clark Art Art Making Activity for Preschoolers

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 am, the Clark Art Institute's Start with Art series returns.   January's free event is themed to storytelling. Designed for preschoolers, Start with Art offers themed talks, gallery guides, and art-making activities. This program is best suited for three- to six-year-olds and their caregivers.   Admission to the Clark is free from January through March 2023. No registration is required. BCC and BRPC Offer Free 'Choke Saver' Training Certification

M&T Bank Contributes to SVHC's Vision 2020 Campaign

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) Foundation accepted a $25,000 donation from the M&T Bank Charitable Foundation last week.    The contribution will help fund Vision 2020, A Decade of Transformation Capital Campaign, the hospital's largest project in more than 30 years.
