Community Contra Dance in Williamstown

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The first community contra dance of 2024 will be hosted on Saturday, Jan. 13, by North Berkshire Community Dance.     All dances will be taught by Paul Rosenberg, and live fiddle music will be led by Eric Buddington.  The dance will run 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Community Hall of the First Congregational Church, 906 Main St., Williamstown.    Admission is pay-as-you-can:  $12 - $20 suggested, and barter is also welcome.    Health precautions:  Masks required.  For this first post-holiday dance in a season of rising respiratory illness, NBCD has chosen to require masks on the dance floor. Williamstown Charter Review Committee Hones Report, Recommendations

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee on Thursday neared completion of a final report it plans to submit to the Select Board on Jan. 22.   The review panel, which was appointed in 2022, has compiled a set of 10 proposed amendments to the 1956 document that provides a framework for town government.   Some of the proposed changes, like removing outdated references to the town's "Welfare Agent" and school committee, are a matter of updating the charter to reflect the current reality.   Others, like the creation of a recall provision for elected town officials and a new section on mechanisms for charter enforcement, are more substantive

Carpenter Breaks School Assist Record at Framingham State

Framingham State senior point guard Gwendolyn Carpenter last month broke the all time assist record at the school.   Her 466th career assist came in a win over Curry College on Dec. 9, breaking a 5-year-old school record.   Carpenter was averaging more than seven assists per game going into Wednesday's home game against Westfield State. She also led the Rams (11-1) in minutes played, averaging 36.8 minutes per contest and had scored 9.4 points per game.   Carpenter is no stranger to breaking records. As a senior at Mount Everett, she set Berkshire County's all-time scoring mark for high school basketball.   Framingham State visits MCLA on Wednesday, Jan.

New Art Show at Images Cinema

Williams Women's Basketball Beats WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Cortland McBarron scored 21 points Tuesday to lead the Williams College women's basketball team to a 70-53 win over Worcester Polytechnic.   Arianna Gerig scored 10 points and blocked two shots in the win.   Williams (7-6) goes to Amherst on Friday.   Men's Hockey BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Garrett Devine scored two special teams goals Tuesday to lead the University of New England to a 4-1 win over Williams.   Nicholas Rashkovsky scored for Williams (2-8) which travels to face Trinity on Friday.

The year started with one high school state championship on the show and ended with another on the hardwood.     In between, there were plenty of team titles, tournament runs and individual accomplishments to keep Berkshire County high school and youth sports fans in the seats and on the sidelines.   Although not every successful season ended in the ultimate prize, there was plenty to be proud of along the way.
