By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:20AM / Friday, January 06, 2023
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Members of the Charter Review Committee on Thursday reiterated that some of the issues it is examining may best be addressed outside the town's charter.   "The big choice is: Does it need to be in the charter or the bylaws?" Chair Andy Hogeland said. "It can also go into policies and procedures."   Not for the first time since it first convened in September, the ad hoc committee talked about other mechanisms for changing the operation of town government or codifying existing operations without amendments to the 1956 charter.   Which is not to say that the committee is not leaning toward making specific recommendations to

08:07AM / Wednesday, January 04, 2023
MONTPELIER, Vt. — With the start of the new year, many Vermonters are preparing for ice fishing.    "If you're looking for a fun, easy way to get outdoors with friends and family this winter, ice fishing is hard to top," said Fisheries Biologist Shawn Good.  "It's quick to learn, affordable and generally more accessible and social than open water fishing."   In light of Vermont's recent warm weather, the department stresses that anglers take ice safety seriously and recommends a few basic tips and precautions.   "A minimum of three to four inches of clear black ice is safe to walk on," advised Good.  "If

Letter to the Editor,
03:00PM / Tuesday, January 03, 2023

To the Editor:

I just posted the following as a comment to Mr. Dravis' article on 2022 in Williamstown. Many in Williamstown rely on Mr. Dravis' reporting as their primary source of local news. With that influence comes responsibility.

Below are some quotes from Mr. Dravis' article. They are assertions. If Mr. Dravis has facts to support these assertions, I hope he feels responsibility to share them. The context in which the perpetrator(s) act is important. And, most of all, when investigation yields important information, that information should be given as much print as the initial posting. Sometimes investigation reveals that which seems "racist" is better called

Williamstown's Mehlin Connects to Community Through Volunteerism
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
06:09PM / Friday, December 30, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Volunteering allowed Peter Mehlin to find his place in his hometown.   Finding a permanent place on the walls of its elementary school was an unexpected bonus.   Mehlin is a product of Williamstown's public schools, graduating from the old town high school on School Street a few doors down from his family's home.   After earning his bachelor's degree from Middlebury College and a master's in library science from Columbia, he built a career in the Brooklyn public library system for 35 years before retiring and returning to that School Street home in 2002 … right about the time the then-new elementary school was opening its
