WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On Tuesday, April 2 at 5:30 pm, the Clark Art Institute's Research and Academic Program presents a lecture by Cynthea J. Bogel (Kyushu University / Clark Fellow).    Bogel explores motifs on the pedestal of a key eighth-century sculpture: a colossal gilt-bronze Buddha (Nara period, 710–784) and the main icon of the temple Yakushiji. The talk takes place in the Clark's auditorium, located in the Manton Research Center.   According to a press release:   Scholars interpret the pedestal motifs as a pastiche of Sinitic symbols inconsistent with Buddhist representation. Williamstown Select Board Votes Down Gaza Ceasefire Resolution
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
11:22PM / Monday, March 25, 2024
WILLIAMSTOWN. Mass. — The Select Board on Monday voted, 4-1, not to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.   After several weeks of passionate testimony on both sides of the question at board meetings and countless hours of conversations in town and online, the decision for several members came down to a basic principle: It is not the job of the board to speak for the town on complex, politically divisive issues like the conflict between Israel and Hamas.   Andrew Hogeland, one of the longer-tenured members of the board who has been associated with the concept that the elected body should "stay in its lane" and not take sides on issues outside town

05:48AM / Monday, March 25, 2024

Williams College associate counsel Laura Gura discusses the MRC in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College on Thursday cleared the second of three local regulatory hurdles on its way to building an indoor athletic practice facility on the north end of campus.   On a 5-0 vote, the Zoning Board of Appeals found that the town's 35-foot height limit on buildings would be "a practical prohibition" on the use planned for what the school is calling a multi-purpose recreation center on Stetson Road.   The planned building will have three tennis courts, a three-lane 200-meter track and provide indoor practice space

06:02PM / Saturday, March 23, 2024
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Berkshire County High School Girls Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday welcomed nine new members, including seven women who were lauded for their many successes on the hardwood.   At least one also was recognized for her failures.   “I think the thing I’m proudest of is not so much what she did on the court, but how she was able to put herself in a position to fail time and time again,” Frank Field said in his remarks about his daughter, 2017 Hoosac Valley High School graduate Fallon Field. “That’s not easy for kids to do. Those who do it can really excel.   “No matter what the role was … whether it was the

Letter: Letter to Williamstown Board of Selectmen
Letter to the Editor,
04:00PM / Thursday, March 21, 2024

To the Editor:

To the members of the Williamstown Board of Selectmen:

First of all, let us say thank you for your commitment to this community. Williamstown is a well-run town, and you should be proud of your contribution.

That being said, we are distressed to hear that you are planning to make a statement on behalf of the community regarding the Hamas/Israel war. In our opinion, this goes far beyond your mandate as selectpersons. You were elected because of your perceived qualifications to run the affairs of this small town.

You were not elected to pretend to represent the opinion of us or any other member of this community concerning international affairs, and it would be presumptuous

Williamstown Con Comm OKs Waubeeka Repair, Rural Lands Parking Lot
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
03:34PM / Thursday, March 21, 2024
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Conservation Commission last week gave the green light to two projects along Route 7.   The new owner of Waubeeka Golf Links and the executive director of the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation were before the commission seeking negative determinations of applicability under the Wetlands Protection Act for activity on their lands.   A negative determination from the panel means that landowners do not have to file a more costly and time-consuming Notice of Intent, which involves a full engineering study.   Waubeeka owner Chris Kapiloff sought and received the Con Comm's permission to replace an existing but failed pipe that was installed to

Williamstown Fire District Shifts to CM at Risk Model for Fire Station Project
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:37AM / Thursday, March 21, 2024
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After disappointment in the response to the Fire District's first request for bids, the Prudential Committee on Wednesday decided to go with a different method to find a contractor for the Main Street station project.   By a vote of 4-0, the committee opted to put the project out to bid under the construction manager at risk model.   Earlier this year, the station was put out to bid under the "design-bid-build" model, the other process allowable under Massachusetts law for a project this size.   That request for proposals yielded just one bid, for $18,936,159, from Allegrone Construction.   The district had been operating with an

By Stephen Dravis,
12:15PM / Wednesday, March 20, 2024
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Conservation Commission last week reaffirmed its commitment to a proposal to transfer control of the Spruces Park to that body.   Con Comm Chair Lauren Stevens asked his colleagues whether they wanted to reconsider a decision to ask town meeting to put the Spruces property under the commission's care, custody and control.   "The Spruces is a multi-use property, everything from the agricultural portion to a bike path to a pollinator garden to dog-walking and, soon to be established by the Select Board, an unleashed portion of the dog walking even though FEMA will not allow a fence," Stevens said. "A portion of the land will be

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
10:42AM / Wednesday, March 20, 2024
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — With one week left for candidates to file, the town has, at most, one potential candidate for each of the positions on the May town election ballot.   Town Clerk Nicole Beverly Tuesday reported that only incumbent Jeffrey Johnson has pulled nomination papers for the single Select Board seat that is up for election this spring.   As of Tuesday, he had not returned the papers with signatures for certification.   On the other hand, incumbent Anna Halpin-Healy has returned papers to retain a seat on the board of trustees for the Milne Public Library, and those signatures have been certified.   Likewise, newcomer Samantha Page has secured a spot on
