Pittsfield Council Passes $216M Budget, Cuts SchoolsBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council closed budget season just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, approving a $216 million spending plan for fiscal year 2025. This includes a cut to the School Department. Councilors approved a $215,955,210 spending plan that is a 5 percent increase from this year and includes a $200,000 reduction to the $82 million Pittsfield Public School budget. The budget passed 10-1 with Ward 2 Councilor Brittany Noto in opposition.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The class speaker for the 104 graduates of Mount Greylock Regional School apologized for the wild and crazy antics of the class of 2024. "Our class was not that easy. We came into this brand-new school like a bull in a china shop. It was crazy," Judge Martin said. Students came into the middle school from surrounding towns, and "with that mix of kids, chaos happened."  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – A Williamstown farm that has been on the market for several years was purchased this week, but the purchaser has declined to talk about its plans for the property. On Monday, the real estate agent listing the Green River Farms property in South Williamstown confirmed that a deal had closed on the property and directed inquiries to an employee of an Alabama-based farm consulting company named Understanding Agriculture.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Board of Health on Monday voted unanimously not to revoke the license of a South Williamstown restaurant that has been operating under a boil water order from the state Department of Environmental Protection since December. Instead the board ordered the '6 House Pub to use more prominent signage to notify patrons of the order, called for more frequent inspections by the town's health inspector and warned the restaurant that even one instance of E. coli contamination tied to the establishment will be grounds for revocation. PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Jay Santangelo of Lenox was the top nonbinary runner at the Berkshire Pride 5K on Sunday. Santangelo covered the 5-kilometer course in 27 minutes, 14.53 seconds to place 16th overall among 94 finishers. Pittsfield's Cam LaFerriere was the overall winner in 22.45.72, a 7:19 mile pace. LaFerriere finished 24 seconds ahead of Canaan, N.Y.'s, Thomas Salaatte in second place (23:09.52).
