Williamstown Select Board Talks about Bylaw for Flags on Town-Owned PolesBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff 05:04AM / Thursday, March 02, 2023 | | WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday discussed a potential town bylaw that would regulate the display of flags on town property. But while leaning toward a regulation that would limit those flags, several members of the board pushed for rules that also would open up the potential for more expression in other public spaces. The discussion led to the latest in a long series of discussions about the extent to which the board itself should endorse political points of view. "Do we want to give future Select Boards the power to hoist other flags?" asked Andrew Hogeland, who put together a draft bylaw that ultimately would go to town meeting for 13 Comments Read More >> |

Williamstown Residents Approve New Fire StationBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com 09:06PM / Tuesday, February 28, 2023 | | WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — An overwhelming number of voters at a well attended special fire district meeting Tuesday approved a $22.5 million project to build a new fire station on Main Street. By a vote of 509-32, attendees of the meeting at Williamstown Elementary School gave the district permission to borrow up to that amount to replace the aging, cramped facility on Water Street. The vote is the culmination of a decade-long effort to replace the current station with one that officials say will meet the needs of the community for decades to come and which meets the town's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Letter: Scope & Timing Wrong for New FirehouseLetter to the Editor, 01:00PM / Tuesday, February 28, 2023 | |
To the Editor: As a high-schooler in central Mass., I occasionally helped our Volunteer Fire Dept. put out grass fires caused by the railroad, so I have some understanding of what these outstanding people do for us in Williamstown. And I’m confident everyone in town appreciates and values the work of our Volunteer Fire Department. However, the current proposal to build a $23 million firehouse here in town is another story. The problem is with both the project’s scope and timing. Let’s first look at the timing. The economy is roaring. Unemployment is down. Inflation is up (look at the price of eggs!). Interest rates are higher than they’ve been in a decade or more

The Williamstown Fire District will hold a special district meeting at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium at Williamstown Elementary School with a single question on the warrant: whether voters in the district, which covers the entire town, will authorize the necessary borrowing to build a station at 580 Main St. (Route 2), on property the district acquired with authorization from a special district meeting in 2017. Like the 2017 decision, fire officials will need a two-thirds "super majority" of attendees at Tuesday's 11 Comments Read More >> |
