Letter: Vote for Someone Other Than TrumpLetter to the Editor, 05:00PM / Wednesday, March 27, 2024
To the Editor: I urge my Republican friends to vote for someone other than Donald Trump in November. His rallies are getting embarrassingly sparse and his speeches more hostile and confused. He's looking desperately for money, now selling poor-quality gold sneakers for $399. While Trump's online fans embrace him more tightly, more and more of the people who actually worked with Trump have broken with him, often issuing statements denouncing his motives, intellect, and patriotism. Mike Pence is the most recent, but the list now includes William Barr, former attorney general (who compared him to a 9-year-old); former NSC Chairs Bolton and McMaster; former Defense Secretaries Mattis

Williamstown Finance Committee Finishes Review of FY25 BudgetBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff 05:32AM / Wednesday, March 27, 2024 | | WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Finance Committee last week voted to recommend town meeting pass a fiscal year 2025 budget that would result in about a 1 percent increase in the amount of money needed to be raised in property taxes. The meeting at Town Hall was the last in a five-week series of sessions during which Fin Comm members repeatedly pushed to keep the tax levy increase as close to zero as possible at a time of rising costs both for Town Hall and the public schools. "Overall, what I think you'll see is not a budget that is very exciting in terms of new ideas, new initiatives, things of that nature," Town Manager Bob Menicocci said when introducing the 0 Comments Read More >> |

Williamstown Select Board Votes Down Gaza Ceasefire ResolutionBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff 11:22PM / Monday, March 25, 2024 | | WILLIAMSTOWN. Mass. — The Select Board on Monday voted, 4-1, not to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. After several weeks of passionate testimony on both sides of the question at board meetings and countless hours of conversations in town and online, the decision for several members came down to a basic principle: It is not the job of the board to speak for the town on complex, politically divisive issues like the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Andrew Hogeland, one of the longer-tenured members of the board who has been associated with the concept that the elected body should "stay in its lane" and not take sides on issues outside town 0 Comments Read More >> |
Williamstown Zoning Board Clears College's Practice FacilityBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff 05:48AM / Monday, March 25, 2024
Williams College associate counsel Laura Gura discusses the MRC in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College on Thursday cleared the second of three local regulatory hurdles on its way to building an indoor athletic practice facility on the north end of campus. On a 5-0 vote, the Zoning Board of Appeals found that the town's 35-foot height limit on buildings would be "a practical prohibition" on the use planned for what the school is calling a multi-purpose recreation center on Stetson Road. The planned building will have three tennis courts, a three-lane 200-meter track and provide indoor practice space 0 Comments Read More >> |
Nine Inducted into County Girls Basketball Hall of FameBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports 06:02PM / Saturday, March 23, 2024 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Berkshire County High School Girls Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday welcomed nine new members, including seven women who were lauded for their many successes on the hardwood. At least one also was recognized for her failures. “I think the thing I’m proudest of is not so much what she did on the court, but how she was able to put herself in a position to fail time and time again,” Frank Field said in his remarks about his daughter, 2017 Hoosac Valley High School graduate Fallon Field. “That’s not easy for kids to do. Those who do it can really excel. “No matter what the role was … whether it was the 0 Comments Read More >> |
Letter: Letter to Williamstown Board of SelectmenLetter to the Editor, 04:00PM / Thursday, March 21, 2024
To the Editor: To the members of the Williamstown Board of Selectmen: First of all, let us say thank you for your commitment to this community. Williamstown is a well-run town, and you should be proud of your contribution. That being said, we are distressed to hear that you are planning to make a statement on behalf of the community regarding the Hamas/Israel war. In our opinion, this goes far beyond your mandate as selectpersons. You were elected because of your perceived qualifications to run the affairs of this small town. You were not elected to pretend to represent the opinion of us or any other member of this community concerning international affairs, and it would be presumptuous

The new owner of Waubeeka Golf Links and the executive director of the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation were before the commission seeking negative determinations of applicability under the Wetlands Protection Act for activity on their lands. A negative determination from the panel means that landowners do not have to file a more costly and time-consuming Notice of Intent, which involves a full engineering study. Waubeeka owner Chris Kapiloff sought and received the Con Comm's permission to replace an existing but failed pipe that was installed to 0 Comments Read More >> |
