WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After June's annual town meeting referred back most of an ambitious slate of proposals from the Planning Board, the panel is preparing a simpler, more focused set of proposed bylaw amendments that it hopes will be more readily understood by members of town meeting 2023.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock School Committee on Thursday learned that the initial estimate to pay for a field and track project at the middle-high school is higher than anticipated, but the panel voted unanimously to take the next step toward bringing the project to fruition. Estimators hired by the district's owner's project manager, Skanska, determined that the projected bottom line for an eight-lane track around a new multi-purpose grass playing field with adjacent areas for shot put, discus and javelin competitions is just under $3.5 million, the committee learned. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Wednesday decided to set a late November deadline for the non-profit seeking to be assigned the town's right of first refusal on a 10-acre parcel of farmland off Oblong Road. A portion of the Phelps property currently used for grazing by Sweet Brook Farm is under a purchase and sales agreement for $745,000. But because the land previously was conserved under Chapter 61 of Massachusetts General Law and eligible for a lower assessment for local property tax purposes, the town has a right of first refusal to either purchase the land itself (for the agreed-upon price) or allow a qualified non-profit to buy it for purposes of 0 Comments

 WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College on Monday reported that the school's Soldier's Monument on Main Street was defaced with apparent white supremacist graffiti. President Maud Mandel sent an email to the college community reporting that a local resident reported to the school the presence of a Confederate flag and the painted word "Rebel" on the base of the Civil War statue, located outside the school's Griffin Hall. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williamstown Fire District is in the market for a new treasurer after Cory Thurston announced at last week's Prudential Committee meeting that he plans to step down from the office. Thurston has served in the capacity since he was elected in May 2019 to what, at the time, was the district's clerk/treasurer position. A lot changed in the three years that followed.
