Williamstown Board's Try to Make Housing Affordable Called 'Madness'
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:10AM / Monday, October 17, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After June's annual town meeting referred back most of an ambitious slate of proposals from the Planning Board, the panel is preparing a simpler, more focused set of proposed bylaw amendments that it hopes will be more readily understood by members of town meeting 2023.   Last week, the board heard a sample of just how objectionable some residents can find even the simplest of ideas.   "I may be the only person in this room feeling this way, but it seems like madness has taken hold of the Planning Board," Rhon Ernest-Jones told the board.   Ernest-Jones was speaking in response to a draft warrant article that would

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
12:25PM / Sunday, October 16, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock School Committee on Thursday learned that the initial estimate to pay for a field and track project at the middle-high school is higher than anticipated, but the panel voted unanimously to take the next step toward bringing the project to fruition.   Estimators hired by the district's owner's project manager, Skanska, determined that the projected bottom line for an eight-lane track around a new multi-purpose grass playing field with adjacent areas for shot put, discus and javelin competitions is just under $3.5 million, the committee learned.   That estimate is based on the current market for construction and materials to

Williamstown Sets November Deadline on Conserved Land Question
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
12:14PM / Friday, October 14, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Wednesday decided to set a late November deadline for the non-profit seeking to be assigned the town's right of first refusal on a 10-acre parcel of farmland off Oblong Road.   A portion of the Phelps property currently used for grazing by Sweet Brook Farm is under a purchase and sales agreement for $745,000. But because the land previously was conserved under Chapter 61 of Massachusetts General Law and eligible for a lower assessment for local property tax purposes, the town has a right of first refusal to either purchase the land itself (for the agreed-upon price) or allow a qualified non-profit to buy it for purposes of

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College on Monday reported that the school's Soldier's Monument on Main Street was defaced with apparent white supremacist graffiti.   President Maud Mandel sent an email to the college community reporting that a local resident reported to the school the presence of a Confederate flag and the painted word "Rebel" on the base of the Civil War statue, located outside the school's Griffin Hall.   "The Confederate flag and the word 'Rebel' are commonly used as symbols by white supremacists and other extremist factions," Mandel wrote. "The appearance of those marks is more evidence that we live in a world

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
04:29AM / Monday, October 10, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The town's diversity committee last week decided it needs a little more time to respond to an evolving purpose statement its members have been discussing with members of the Select Board. The latter body had hoped to have a response from the Diversity, Inclusion and Racial Equity Committee in time for possible adoption of the purpose document at the Select Board's Oct. 12 meeting.   But the joint working group of the two panels was unable to sign off on the latest draft before the DIRE Committee's Oct. 3 meeting.   "Jeff [Johnson] and I wanted to not have it be a public document until there was a consensus among the four of us: Noah

Williamstown Fire District Seeking Treasurer
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
06:41PM / Tuesday, October 04, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williamstown Fire District is in the market for a new treasurer after Cory Thurston announced at last week's Prudential Committee meeting that he plans to step down from the office.   Thurston has served in the capacity since he was elected in May 2019 to what, at the time, was the district's clerk/treasurer position.   A lot changed in the three years that followed. The district broke the clerk and treasurer roles into two separate jobs, and it moved them from elected offices to positions appointed by the five-person Prudential Committee.   "That was changed from an elected official a few years ago to make sure the district had a
