Guest Column: Full Steam Ahead: Bringing Back the Northern Tier Passenger Railroad

You only need a glance outside to see a problem all too familiar to Berkshire county: closing businesses, a shrinking population, and a stunning lack of regional investment.

But 70 years ago, this wasn't an issue. On the North Adams-Boston passenger rail line before the '60s, Berkshires residents could easily go to Boston and back in a day, and the region benefited from economic influx. But as cars supplanted trains, the Northern Tier was terminated, and now only freight trains regularly use the line.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Greylock Canine Club owner Peter Umbrianna is always surprised when owners drop off their dogs at his South Williamstown doggy day-care.    "The owners pull up, open their doors and these dogs got out running," Umbrianna said. "They don't waste time. They're so excited to get in to see their friends. They bomb into that welcome shed. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – After allowing the first batter she faced to reach base and score, Marlee Arhnold gave up nothing at all on Friday night.   The Greylock Thunder’s Arnhold struck out eight and gave up just two hits in an 11-1, five-inning win over the Berkshire Force in the 14-and-under Summer Storm Tournament on Fran Millard Field.   Genevieve Lagess went 2-for-3 with a double, and Gianna Witek was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Thunder, which started its home tournament in style.   Arnhold was in control throughout after giving up a leadoff walk to Lillian MacDonald and a two-out RBI triple to Kylie Duhamel in the bottom of the first inning.   At one

Williamstown Select Board Discusses Language in 'Guidebook'

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — During a discussion about goal setting and priorities for the 2024-25 term, Select Board member Randal Fippinger on Monday pointed out that the body has limited bandwidth.   "There's so much that we have to do," Fippinger said. Clark Art Presents Performance By Ximena Bedoya

Bomb Threat that Closed Williams Campus Deemed 'Not Credible'

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College Thursday briefly closed its campus and sent all non-essential employees home for the day after a reported bomb threat that later was deemed to be "not credible."   Late Thursday morning, the college sent an alert to its employees that the school was investigating a threat to several college buildings and ordering the evacuation of Faculty House, the Paresky Center, Mission dorm and "athletics and all libraries."   By about 11:45 a.m., the college released the same information in a post on social media, and shortly before noon, it announced on "X" (formerly Twitter), "Please evacuate and avoid area

Clark Art Hosts Free Community Day

Williamstown Fills Vacant Seat on Library Trustees Board
