Kenneth Kuttner campaigns Tuesday morning at Williamstown Elementary School. He won a seat on the Planning Board. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Next week, Williamstown residents at town meeting will be asked whether they want to do away once and for all with the antiquated term "Board of Selectmen."   On Tuesday, voters resoundingly decided that the next version of the Select Board will not be all male.   Three-time incumbent Jane Patton was the top vote-getter in a three-way race for two seats on the five-person panel.   Patton and Randall Fippinger were the victors in the town election conducted at Williamstown Elementary School.   With 1,438 residents

Willamstown Staying with Annual Town Meeting in School Gym
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
02:45PM / Tuesday, May 10, 2022
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — If any residents want to avoid having the annual town meeting in an enclosed space next Tuesday night, they will have to attend that meeting and make their case to other meeting members.   On Monday night, Town Moderator Adam Filson explained to the Select Board his reasons for holding the meeting as scheduled on May 17 at 7 p.m. in the Williamstown Elementary School gymnasium.   "This is not an easy decision," Filson said from the lectern at the Select Board's regular meeting. "I have to go with the information I have."   That information, outlined in a memo to the board, includes the fact that while the most recent 14-day

Letter: Kuttner for Planning Board
Letter to the Editor,
07:10PM / Sunday, May 08, 2022

To the Editor:

Ken Kuttner will make a wonderful addition to the Williamstown Planning Board.

The goals of preserving land and creating housing for people of all incomes do not need to be mutually exclusive. And yet some of the changes to the zoning bylaws that the Planning Board has put forth as a means of increasing affordable housing could radically alter the landscape of Williamstown and fail to lead to more affordable housing.

A good, smart planner like Ken Kuttner, a candidate for Planning Board, understands that a well-planned town protects its natural environment and farmland, while also providing housing for people of all incomes. We would all be well served by having such an

Letter: DeMayo-Wall Running for Planning Board
Letter to the Editor,
07:00PM / Sunday, May 08, 2022

To the Editor:

Dear Williamstown Voters, My name is Carin DeMayo-Wall and I am running for the Williamstown Planning Board. I ask for your vote on May 10.

I grew up right here in Williamstown. I attended Mount Greylock High School ('89) and Williams College ('93). I originally left to work at the State House in Boston and I returned to Williamstown 10 years ago. Williamstown was, and is, a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I have seen how my hometown has changed and I have a vision for its more inclusive future.

I was moved to run for Planning Board when I witnessed several families, whose kids were in my own child's classroom at Williamstown Elementary School,

Letter: Jane Patton for Williamstown Select Board
Letter to the Editor,
06:45PM / Sunday, May 08, 2022

To the Editor:

We are writing in support of Jane Patton for re-election to the Select Board.

Jane led the board through a tumultuous time in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd (in Minneapolis in 2020) and the revelations of misconduct in the Williamstown Police Department. Under Jane's leadership, the Select Board created the DIRE committee and she served as a member in its inaugural year. Over the past two years, Jane has shown up every day, listened empathically and worked diligently to build back the trust that was lost with many in the community. She asked the difficult questions, held people accountable and made the tough decisions.

Jane and her colleagues on

Letter: Vote DeMayo-Wall for Planning Board
Letter to the Editor,
06:40PM / Sunday, May 08, 2022

To the Editor:

The only way that you can live in Williamstown and say "let's wait for the new town plan to solve our housing problem" with a straight face is if you're new to town or you have been asleep. We know that Williamstown will not follow housing recommendations in a master plan because we have a near-perfect record of not doing so.

Here's the evidence we do have: Williamstown's 2002 plan outlined seven strategies the town should use to create a target of 200 new housing units that people at or under the area median income could afford. We then spent the next 20 years ignoring all but one of the recommendations, and disparaging those who sought to bring

Letter: Planning Board Candidate Carin DeMayo-Wall
Letter to the Editor,
06:30PM / Sunday, May 08, 2022

To the Editor:

I am writing in support of Carin DeMayo-Wall for Planning Board. I believe that her connection to and ongoing involvement in our town and our issues makes her the best person for the job.

Carin runs a family farm, so she knows the issues of farmers. She and her family rent apartments, so she knows the issues of people who can't find "affordable" housing in town. She has seen some of those families leave town, because they can not find affordable housing. She has worked for 30 years at the Williamstown food pantry, so she knows the issues of our citizens who find it hard to make ends meet. Not only does she have children in our school system, she herself was

Letter: Support for Williamstown Planning Board Recommendations
Letter to the Editor,
06:15PM / Sunday, May 08, 2022

To the Editor:

I support the Williamstown Planning Board's bylaw recommendations. They represent a good first step towards reducing the artificial barriers in our decades-old zoning map.

While some have criticized the board for moving too fast, I found the process deliberate and thorough. The board engaged the community in an open discussion. There was a spirited debate, with many opportunities for community input. The original proposal was changed in response to suggestions received along the way, which reflected the board's willingness to listen and respond to the community.

The final product (1) removes barriers for apartments above businesses and small scale multi-unit
