WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Rising costs plus flat revenues add up to a tricky budget season for Williamstown Town Manager Robert Menicocci this winter. "Out of the gates, we have a match problem," Menicocci told the Select Board at its Nov. 13 meeting. "Property taxes always have the 2.5 percent levy limit on them from Proposition 2 1/2. And unless you have significant property growth in terms of coming on the [tax] rolls, like we did with Cable Mills last year, that's our only source of additional growth to help fund either new requests or fund gaps like we have now with what we're facing with inflation." WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock School Committee last week began the process of enacting an updated and expanded district policy on library material selection and review. The 1,500-word proposed policy came to the full panel via its policy subcommittee and would appear to replace two existing policies, titled "Library Materials Selection and Adoption" and "Library Resources," that add up to about 800 words on the topic. The proposed policy received a "first read" at the School Committee's Nov. 14 meeting. No action could be taken on the proposed rules until after a second read at a subsequent meeting. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Clark Art Institute announces its summer 2024 schedule, featuring exhibitions, events, and activities. Leading its summer program is a major new exhibition of works by French artist Guillaume Lethière featuring some eighty paintings, prints, and drawings. Organized in partnership with the Musée du Louvre (Louvre Museum), the exhibition premieres at the Clark and then travels to Paris for an autumn 2024 exhibition at the Louvre. CARLISLE, Pa. -- John Lucey finished sixth Saturday to lead the Williams College men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship. Pomona-Pitzer won the team competition with 158 points, one point ahead of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, whose Ethan Gregg won the men's title. Williams' men finished with 212 points. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Williams College is looking eastward for athletic facilities with the closure of the Towne Field House. The Planning Board on Monday approved a change-of-use application for a unit at 69 Union St. to operate a fitness facility. The special permit would allow the college to extend its use of the spaces in the former Shapiro Chevrolet dealership for its athletes.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williamstown Fire District last week cleared one of two local regulatory hurdles facing the new station project on Main Street. By a vote of 7-0, the Conservation Commission approved and set conditions for the construction project to replace the aging station on Water Street. This Thursday, fire district officials will be back at Town Hall to seek the OK of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the $22.5 million project that district voters overwhelmingly approved in February.
