To the Editor: As a high-schooler in central Mass., I occasionally helped our Volunteer Fire Dept. put out grass fires caused by the railroad, so I have some understanding of what these outstanding people do for us in Williamstown. And I’m confident everyone in town appreciates and values the work of our Volunteer Fire Department. However, the current proposal to build a $23 million firehouse here in town is another story. The problem is with both the project’s scope and timing. Let’s first look at the timing. The economy is roaring. Unemployment is down. Inflation is up (look at the price of eggs!). The Williamstown Fire District will hold a special district meeting at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium at Williamstown Elementary School with a single question on the warrant: whether voters in the district, which covers the entire town, will authorize the necessary borrowing to build a station at 580 Main St. (Route 2), on property the district acquired with authorization from a special district meeting in 2017. Williams Men's Hockey Rallies for Playoff Win01:03PM / Sunday, February 26, 2023 | | MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Jonah Gold scored with 51 seconds left to complete a 4-3, third-period comeback win for the Williams College men's hockey team in the quarter-finals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday. Williams went down, 3-0, in the second minute of the third period. But Owen Stadheim scored in the ninth minute to finally get Williams on the board. Hanna Shea scored 20 points Saturday to lead the Hurricanes to a 71-56 win over Lenox in the Class D final at Holyoke High School. Down the road at Westfield High, Grace Wigington scored 23 to lead Wahconah past Pittsfield High, 61-49 in Class B. But residents have at least three more chances to weigh in on the proposals before that warrant is sealed in mid April. The first chance will come on March 13, when the Planning Board chair and co-chair plan to attend a meeting of the Select Board to explain the proposed warrant articles.
