 WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Community Preservation Committee on Wednesday determined that five of the six applications for funds in the fiscal 2024 cycle meet the qualifications for funding under the Community Preservation Act. In a hybrid meeting at Town Hall, six of the committee's eight members heard presentations from five of the six applicants. Town Manager Robert Menicocci, who is both a voting member of the CPC and the representative for a $100,000 Town Hall request for CPA funds to address overruns in a bicycle/pedestrian trail project, did not attend the committee's first meeting of the calendar year.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On Feb. 2 at 7 pm, the Clark Art Institute screens a selection of short films covering experimental animation from the 1960s and '70s in its auditorium. The showing is the third event in the Clark's Film and Drawing series, inspired by the exhibition, "Promenades on Paper: Eighteenth-Century Drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France," on view through March 12.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College on Thursday morning announced it is committing $5 million toward the cost of building a new fire station on Main Street. College President Maud Mandel announced the result of this past weekend's meeting of the college's Board of Trustees in an email to the college community, and the district issued a news release shortly after. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The committee that oversees the Fire District on Wednesday agreed to lower by 10 percent its request to voters to fund a new station on Main Street. Prudential Committee Chair David Moresi asked his colleagues to hold off on a planned review of the warrant for the Feb. 28 special district meeting to seek borrowing authority to fund the building project.  To the Editor:
I support our Fire Department as well as our Police Department. The proposal to spend $25 million is not unreasonable for what is being proposed. However, the primary reason we need a new fire station is the requirement to have big fire trunks with long ladders to protect Williams College's tall buildings for which the college pays no taxes. While Williams has it's own security police department it does not have its own fire department. It is true that they support Fire Department volunteers, which is good. Thus, the college should contribute $10 million up front toward the new fire station and voters should be asked to vote to approve $15 million toward a new fire

There is no question that the Williamstown Fire District needs a new modern facility to replace its antiquated 73-year-old Water Street station. While a new fire station is long overdue, the proposed $25 million building is challenging to justify. In response to concerns about the size and cost of the project, the district recently released a "Comparison of Size of Proposed Williamstown Fire Station to Other Fire Stations" study on its official website and Facebook page. However, the comparison study overlooks several details and, when thoroughly examined, provides the best evidence why the Feb. 28 vote should be postponed so a re-evaluation can occur, and a new

Guess what? More snow The US National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Wednesday, Jan. 25, for Berkshire County. The watch is in effect from 11 am to Thursday, Jan. 26 at 4 pm. Expect heavy mixed precipitation with total snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches. A light ice accumulation is also possible. Snow will develop early Wednesday afternoon, becoming moderate to heavy through the evening with rates of .5 to 1 inch per hour.
